First NFCU Card - More Rewards AmEx at 25k

$25,000...and I'm actually kind of scared of it! Smiley Surprised I was going to wait a few months to app for another new card (just got a lovely Disco last month) but my car started making an expensive noise and I hated the thought of that spend not serving a higher purpose! I also had a nice pre-qual + 75k offer for an AmEx Gold, but an approval from NFCU felt like more of a safe bet, so here I am! I know most people app for their first NFCU card right away, so wanted to provide datapoints for an approval that waited for a little bit:

  • Score: TU was 735, but I don't know my NFCU internal score which I think was probably a factor.
  • Baddies: Only thing is a string of late payments (120+ days) on one student loan from 5-6 years ago. (FICO doesn't forget, but I guess NFCU is more chill).
  • Profile: Somewhat aged, but not thick due to closed accounts. (AAoA is ~5 years depending on CRA)
  • New accounts: 1/3 and 3/6. 1 INQ on TU.

I've been a member of NFCU since April with a savings account that gets a small portion of my direct deposit. I've had a SSL since June too. I know most people apply for their first card as soon as they joined NFCU, but I intentionally waited because I thought it might help get a higher starting limit. Even so, this surpassed my expectations by quite a bit! My income is not high (this card alone is about half of what I make) and my previous approvals with Chase and Disco have been pretty firmly centered around $5,000.

Thank you So Much for the data points!

IMHO,

Your score helped in conjunction with your baddies being a bit aged.  I  want to point out that I believe your intentional time spend waiting while beginning to build a relationship with this FI was a key factor!!!  I think a lot or people with baddies or even a superb profile tend to overlook or flat out bypass that factor.

You membership and SSL began in April and June of this year, is that correct?  Also for an additional DP, could you share with us, what was the amount of the SSL when you opened it?   I am just thinking it may not have been for a huge amount

😦"...my car started making an expensive noise".  That is definitely one way to describe it 😄
