Hi all! I am a new member and wrote my first post asking some questions about Navy Federal's secured credit card and where I am starting in this journey. I am a disabled Marine Corps veteran who's credit went through the ringer at a young age due mostly to coming home getting id thefted 4 times, waiting for military disability pay, and medical bills. I stayed married luckily throughout the painful bankruptcy process to my highschool sweetheart which is against the odds since I have fought with and beaten 2 addicitons while she struggled with type 1 bipolar which started in her early 20's forcing her to lose her nursing job because of being hospitalized for several months until diagnosed with it. It has been a very tough hard road for us, but the debts, bad credit and bad news is all behind us now. I got approved for a Navy Federal Secured Credit Card I just did the $500.00 dollars. My wife wanted to hold off on Navy because it's not local. She got approved just today for an unsecured capital one platinum credit card with a limit of $300.00! Great for her for getting that as her first card! She was getting offers for the last 4 weeks from them and finally did it. She did have a small snag because of a credit freeze on one of her reports, but as soon as she changed it they accepted her. I had capital one when I was in my 20's, but burned them and it got charged off. I got offers from them the last 4 weeks as well, but did Navy Federal instead because I was worried about getting denied from the prior charge off 15 years ago. It was for $860.00, but I didn't want to take any chances. I need 2 more credit cards and am doing an SSL loan through Navy Federal next month so I have an installment loan reporting. The only question I had was how long should I wait until I apply for the next credit card and which one should it be? I wrote a similar post about this, but wanted to post about both my wife and I getting approved for cards. She isn't feeling well currently and isn't as motivated as I am about this. She's in a depression at the moment, but I'm there for her. I thought I would post for her and tell her all the encourangement that is on this board. I'm sure there are a lot of supportive people both men and women that would have good things to say about her rebuilding. Any support surley helps. Thanks again everyone for being here. Let me know what I should do about the next cards and which ones. Any comments on her doing great or for her from others that have had experience with bipolar or mental health feel free to leave some comments
Thanks! Just trying to help her feel better.
Congratulations on both approvals! Capital One is very forgiving and I don't really see a issue with u getting approved. I burned them 2 years ago for a lot larger amount then $860 dollars and now have a Venture card with a limit of $9600 I say go for it and keep us posted!
NFCU More Rewards: $23,100
NFCU Cash Rewards: 25,000
That's amazing with where you are now with them! Good to know that it makes it easier knowing that so I can apply for them next if I should do so. Should I wait to apply for them if I already got approved a card from Navy Federal a few days ago? Would applying now for cap 1 hurt because of inquiries being too close together? I need those 3 credit card tradelines for my goal of getting the homeloan in 1.5 years and the installment loan is next month. I just don't know when to apply for the next 2 cards.
Congratulations to you and DW on the recent approvals!
Navy's SSL works wonders when adding it a profiles credit mix and paying it down below 9% if you do not have any other open installment loans. 👍
Navy will not consider another application for a CC until at least 91 days have past from your most recent CC approval.
The choice in CC selection ready does depend on spending, so choose a card that will be a benefit to you.
Best of luck to you on your journey!
Thank you for your service 😎
Ok thanks. I want to wait until my secured card graduates until I apply for another one. As far as an installment loan goes, does applying for a vehicle loan hurt my chances of getting a 700 score within 2 years? That's my first goal. The second and main goal is to apply for and get approved for a VA home loan. I just want to be able to give my wife and son a home we are owning vs renting. Renting sucks for us. No dogs, no pets, all these rules, no remodeling, no this, no that, and just a low feeling whenever the landlord comes around. I don't have to pay property tax where I live being a 100% perm and total disabled veteran in Wisconsin thanks to their program on property tax exemption. I want to be paying in something that I'll eventually own debt free. How soon do your scores go up when paying your credit cards each month after coming fresh out of bankruptcy? Thanks for answering my questions by the way.
Unfortunately I do not have specific answers for you. Your questions could be better addressed in the bankruptcy and rebuilding threads. In those sections there are people that can help review your credit profile To determine exactly what is depressing your scores and possibly for what length of time. As well they can give suggestions to help improve your scores hopefully to meet your goals in a time frame that can work best for you.
I recently read in a post that another member put up, I'm not a pro. That saying also applies to myself. Your scores are affected by the details of your profile. Posting in those threads mentioned above could really be a benefit to you in understanding how to get to where you want to be. Please do remember the details do have great meaning for an individual's profile to help determine their own credit scores.
Yes, I agree with you. I will head over there as well and ask around. Since I'm new to this whole forum, I thought asking a variety of questions would give me more chances of getting replies. I still have to fill out some information as well. Thanks again for answering some of my questions.
Congratulations!
Congratulations on your approvals!
