I've had my Chase Freedom for 6 months now, it was my very first credit card, so I decided to pull the trigger on applying for a second card. I applied for the American Express Blue Cash Everyday online yesterday, and I was instantly approved! I was so shocked and excited.

When I applied, my Experian FICO was 730, AAOA 6 months, $0 balance on Freedom, Inquires was 1.

Here's my confusion though; When I got instantly approved, Amex didn't tell me my credit card limit so I decided to call the application status #. When I called them, the automated system verified that I was approved, and was assigned an initial limit of $2,300! WOW! Here's the confusing part, I called another number that gives you an account summary if you give them the last 5 numbers of your account, and the automated system said I have an available credit of $500. Not so good. I then got on the phone and spoke to an actual representative and they confirmed that the credit limited assigned was $2,300.

Why is the CSR and automated application status stating that I have a credit card limit of $2,300, but the account summary # is stating I have an available credit of $500.

Thanks!

Congrats!

The $500 is a temporary CL, since you can use the CC immediately.   I was instantly approved at $1500, but had $1500 as my temporary CL, too.  I used the card to pay my storage unit fee immediately.

Often times, creditors assign "temporary" credit limits to instant approvals to avoid fraud or over use of the account. At least, that's my take on it all.

Ok, so the available credit that the automated account summary of $500 is just temporary, while the $2300 credit limit I was given by the CSR and automated application status will be my actual CL?

Agree. The 500CL was more then likely a common system temp generated as mentioned to preempt against fraud.

Congratulations on landing a nice Amex on the early leg of your credit journey!

Thanks for the help! I do hope the $500 is only the temp CL and the CL of $2,300 the CSR/automated app. status is my actual CL.

Re: Instantly approved for Amex BCE!

It will remain at 500 until you receive and activate the physical card. They're basically giving you a CL to use temporarily without actually possessing the card itself. 2300 will be your CL when you activate. Congrats!

Re: Instantly approved for Amex BCE!

Okay everyone, here is the explination given to me by an AMEX CSR regarding why my available credit when calling the CS # and given an account summary is $500, but why my credit limit is $2300 when calling the application status # and also speaking to a CSR. Yes, many of you guys who said its just a temporary CL until you actually recieve and activiate the card are correct.

As explained by the Amex CSR, when an application is instantly approved, they are instantly given a line of credit to use temporarily until the card arrives, hence my $500 available credit. Now, once you actually recieve the card in the mail and activate it, your real and full credit limit will be available for use instead of the temporary credit line they give you.

So yes, thanks for all you guys who helped me clear the confusion. I just wanted to include official wording from Amex just in case some of you were still wondering.

Have a good one everyone! Thanks again for all the congrats.
