Congrats.  Amex doesn't do a HP once you already have 1 card with them.  If you want to find out your current internal limit the credit services department will tell you.

Is that so? I knew that they would only do a soft pull if you were declined, but I thought that an approval usually meant a hard pull...

I think it's really just a miscommunication. Technically, approval is based on a SP  from their monthly pulls of your credit. It doesn't mean it will be your up to date score. They could approve or deny you based on a 2 month old SP. They can still HP on occasion, and could even pull an additional bureau on top of EX. Chances are higher for an HP in the first couple of months after opening an account for the first time with them as they haven't started pulling your reports yet. You're usually safe from an HP by your 3rd month, but it can still happen.

You're right Brian, but I want to emphasize that AMEX really does sometimes do a HP when a current cardholder applies for an additional card.  If someone is in a position when a HP isn't considered prudent (classic example is an upcoming mortgage application) they need to consider both the risk and the ramifications.

I'm one of several people here who have experienced this personally.

I'll add to that data point. I applied for the AMEX Business Gold after having a corporate card and AMEX EveryDay card with them. It resulted in a HP. I was approved but slightly shocked that it was a HP bc I'd read so much about people getting approved with SP. Maybe different bc it was a Business Gold and not personal?

In my case I already held corporate/business/personal cards and I was looking to add a personal revolver.

Re: Interesting Amex Platinum Approval + Datapoints

TY for sharing your experience.  This approach didn't work for me as I got the dreaded response, " ... we could not find Pre-Qualified Offers for you at this time.  Log In to access personalized offers from American Express."  When I'm logged into my account, I am pre-approved for the Hilton, Bonvoy, and Delta cards, but not the Platinum and new Green cards.  At least I finally learned how to go Incognito.

My scenario is the same as yours:  Approved for the Gold Card five years after BK (AmEx not IIB), and was denied for the Platinum card one month later.  Recon calls were insigtful, and they say they know I want the Platinum card.

Recently, I wrote a terrific letter with a printout of my 705 FICOfrom Experian asking for reconsideration, but the denial was upheld.  I called new accounts and was told to reply after seven months, so I'll just hibernate over Winter and reapply in the Spring .

I also want to get a CC with a big bank--like Citi--after having burned Chase, BofA, and WF, but I don't know which card to start with in the hope of one day leading up to the Citi Prestige or AAdvantage Platinum Select Worl Elite.  Thanks again!!
