Thank you Citizens -$10000 Approval for a Spring Card-NO HARD PULL-read my post for a TWIST!

Hi All,

I was approved a new Citizens Spring card on 3/13/26. I went throug the pre-qual and say my limit & the terrible APR (22.9%). Before I accepted, I frooze my EXP report and 20 minutes later, I accepted this card -because I had a plan (see below).

I received the card on 3/20/26. I have an existing GRANDFATHERED Citizens card with a current APR for Purchases AND Balance Transfers of 11.24%. Knowing that Citizens will combine cards, I called Customer Service on 3/23/25 and had them move the $10K from the new Sprong card over to my Granfathered Card and they closed the Spring account. Now my grandfathered card has a $18,600 CL PLUS I have a Balance Transfer offer on that card of 15 months at Zero % (with a 5% fee-BOOOO). I don't care about the suppose benefits of the Spring Card but why would I want a 22.9% APR card when I have various cards in the 10% & 11% APR (and one with a 12.9% APR) also.

Citizens should have nerfed my grandfathered card with them long ago but they have not and I am happy about that for sure.

@The_Banker

Does Citizens relocate the whole CL from donor card in order to close it out? It was done online or by speaking to an agent?

Reallocated whole line from the Spring Card to my granfathered Citizens card to close the Spring card.
You must call Customer Service-Citizens leaves a lot to be desired as far as their credit card interface (which is a TSYS system). The Citizens app allows you to even do less....

I don't understand why you are so concerned about APR. If you are responsibly using your cards and paying off your monthly statement balances, APR is irrelevant. If you are carrying balances, your goal should be paying them off, not getting higher limits on your other cards. Paying 11.24% interest on a carried balance isn't exactly cheap.

And immediately closing an account after opening it is a bold approach. Future potential lenders you apply with will be able to see that you closed the account right after opening it. Most don't like to see accounts closed when they are under a year old. Your scores are going to take a hit from the new account regardless so why not keep the new account open with a $1000 limit if you needed a higher limit on your grandfathered card for balance transfers?

Re: Thank you Citizens -$10000 Approval for a Spring Card-NO HARD PULL-read my post for a TWIST!

I prefer to have the lowest rates available from any card lender that I have access to. It's a personal preference as you just never know when life will require you to have to carry card balances. My card balances are low-most are on a 2.9% APR offer at PSECU until 3/31/2027-where I paid NO Balance Transfer fees to get them there. I has no need for the Spring card but I will certainly accept a $10K CL any chance I have. As I said in my original post, why would I keep a card open at 22.9% APR when I have a 11.24% APR card with the same lender. This is whht makes sense for me and while I take you point that some lenders may not like seeing that I closed a new card, I'll be good.

In the interim, I'll keep plowing every expense possible through my Robinhood Gold card for the 3% cash back. I PIF on the day before the due date for this card each month and do not use the card again until the next statement for the account cuts so that this card always reports a Zero balance. Whatever expenese I need to take care of when I cannot use my Robinhood card are run through my 2% CB AMEX Busienss Cash Card-which I then PIF the day before that statement cuts.

Thanks for that explanation! It is an interesting approach to getting a CLI. I've seen people consolidate limits and close one account before if they have two cards with one issuer and wanted to preserve TCL when closing an account, but have never seen someone open, consolidate, then close an account.

"Plowing every expense possible" through a card and then choosing not to use that card for a period throughout the month is a bit contradictory. Why aren't you using the Robinhood card between the day before the due date and the statement date? Most card issuers set the statement date 25 days prior to the due date and keep the due date fixed every month. For example, if your due date is the 10th of every month then your March statement date would be March 16th. Not using the card between March 9th and March 16th means you're missing out on 7 days of rewards. Granted you have a decent fall back card and 3% vs 2% is only one percentage point but throughout the course of a year, that is about 84 days you're not getting that extra 1%. Depending on the size of the transactions you make during those 84 days, the cash back dollars could really add up.

What is your motivation for having $0 statement balances? Are you prepping for a mortgage application? I know the FICO 2/4/5 scores are very sensitive to the percentage of accounts with balances.

Re: Thank you Citizens -$10000 Approval for a Spring Card-NO HARD PULL-read my post for a TWIST!

I just prefer to have Zero balances reporting on  the  Robinhood card. I stop using it when it's PIF as there seems to be issue with transactions not posting in timely manner. Whether it's the bank RH uses or it's the merchants I use not settling in a timely manner I cannot tell but I am not spending time investigating that. My payment and usage pattern works for me so that I max out cash rewards as much as I possibly can.

I have no plans to ever apply for a mortgage of any kind. I have never had one as I luckily inherited a fully paid off home that I have worked tirelessly to keep in great condition -which it is-even in the crap Pittsburgh suburb that I live in. Nobody with kids will buy houses in my town (unless that kid is a great football player) as the school district is not great for academics but we have a GREAT High School Football program. Unless the school system improves and the town itself brings new businesses in along with tearing down all of the abandonded properties we have, I'll likely never be able to sell the home for a price that I want so I'll likely die in it. I have nobody other than my sister to leave it to should I proceed her in death (the home was our childhood home and my dad left it to me only-there were reasons -and she did not object).

Do you think reporting $0 balances on your RH card has impacted CLIs with them or other banks? At the end of last year I did some FICO scoring testing out of curiosity to see what impact certain things had on my profile. I wanted to see what the All Zero penalty was worth, what my optimized AZEO scores were, and how different accounts with balances percentages impacted my scores. When I was testing the accounts with balances percentages, I kept reported balances low to avoid total balance dollars from contributing to score changes. For November through February, my reported total balances were below $100. In March, one of my card was eligible for a CLI but I was denied for the following reasons:

  • High unutilized credit line amount on your credit card
  • High unutilized credit line(s) on your other credit card(s) according to your bureau information

The first reason made sense but I was surprised by the second reason. Granted, I didn't need the CLI because I have a high enough limit where my typical spend stays under 10% utilization because I only put gas on that card, but I don't think I'm close to the maximum limit that issuer is willing to extend and it was interesting to see they care about reported balances on other cards. I also found trying to control reported balances to be a chore for the reasons you described. Some reoccurring subscription transactions didn't even post on the same day every month. I was planning on letting balances report naturally after I was done testing and seeing that denial reason reaffirmed my decision. Now I pay all of my accounts the day before the due date which allows me to hold onto my money in a HYSA longer to earn interest. I'm not worried about card issuers taking adverse action because anyone that soft pulls my credit is able to tell that I pay my statement balances in full versus carrying balances month to month when they analyze my credit reports. Since you can't spend a credit score, I've decided to let my natural balances report to maximize cash back and interest earned in the HYSA. The only time I'll do AZEO in the future is when I'm applying for something where score may influence the interest rate, like an auto loan.

You are very lucky to have a paid off house! I've come to accept that I'll never buy a house in my area. I make a decent salary but it is well below the salary needed to afford a house when the median home price is well over $1M. If I had a paid off house I wouldn't ever move either! And you never know... the housing market in your area could turn around as people are priced out of surrounding areas.

P.S. Go Steelers! I became a fan many years ago by proxy (the area I grew up in didn't have any NFL teams). Can't say I'm looking forward to the McCarthy era...
