We have been members since 1999, but have never used them for more than anything except banking and insurance. I got an email today to apply for their Amex card. We just closed on a house about 3 weeks ago and haven't applied for new credit in well over a year. (except our new Sears card for new appliances last week...
) So, I bit the bullet and applied and was instantly approved! I am so excited. We now have large CCs with USAA and NFCU, so now it is time to garden and get rid of all of the small crap cards.
Does anyone have experience with this card?
I don't have the AMEX but I do have the Cash Rewards Plat. Visa. It's my highest ever CL. I'm was thinking of going for the AMEX also but am more leaning toward the Rate Advantage Mastercard. What CL were you approved for if you don't mind sharing?

We were approved for $12,500. We also have the NFCU Flagship Rewards, so we are going to start canceling our small, annual fee cards tomorrow. Except, we are going to keep our oldest, just to keep the history. We love everything else USAA, so I hope their CC division is just as great.
Congrats! Thanks for sharing.
Congrats, USAA is my favorite card, the fact that its only 8.9% apr and my second largest limit is wonderful
Congrats!!! USAA is the best!!!

I was solicited for one of their Amex cards a couple of years ago. I accepted, and it's been a good card to carry. Even if it's not my primary card, I know that when I call them the associate will be helpul.
Regarding those smaller cards with annual fees - there are some lenders like First Premier, Credit One, etc that will absolutely not remove an annual fee. There are others that may remove the annual fee, or at least waive the next annual fee.
I'd try to see if they can be waived... and when asked why you want to close the accounts you tell them, and if they don't care, then the account gets closed... There are others that are likely to be willing to extend credit as a new homeowner.
Thank you! That is what I intend to do. If they aren't willing to help me out, I am happy to move on and broaden my horizons. ![]()
Slowly closed my small limit or poor bank cards with AF. The closing had virtually no effect om my FICO Scores and they still report as positives for ten years. Note, you loose the utilization factor but for $200 or $300 CL's what's the big deal. Thin credit file then move more slowly. Oh, have been a USAA Member for 4 years now and have their AMEX and World Mastercard. They both work well and the CSRs have been wonderful to me!
