USBank Cash+ Approval ... but I have a question ...

Applied online this morning for a USBank Cash+ card. A couple weeks ago, I did see that I was pre-qualified for this card, but they removed the pre-qualification function before I could act. I received the 7-10 day message regarding a decision. I called the automated number to check the status a couple times throughout the day, and about six hours after I applied, the message came up congratulations, you’ll receive your card in 7-10 business days.

So I called a different number and spoke to a CSR and asked about the SL on the card. $1,000. OK, but I was really hoping for more. My question is this: considering I don’t even have the card in hand, is it too soon to request a CLI?

Here’s some DPs at time of app for those that are interested. The HP was against TU. Don’t know about SPs. No prior relationship with USBank, and there are no branches in my state that I’m aware of (Michigan).

TU FICO 8: 757 EX FICO 8: 760 EQ FICO 8: 769

FAKO TU score dropped four points as soon as the site I was using got the HP.

TU info because that’s what they pulled:

Total HPs in 24 months: 6

Five revolving accounts ($24,000 total credit) with 1% Utilization ($73 total on two cards)

One Installment loan balance (Chase/Mazda lease): $9,351

AAoA: 11 mo

AoOA: 1y 6mo

AoYA: 6mo

No missed payments, no Public Records, no Collections, no closed accounts, no derogatory information

$39,000 reported income $28,830 Non-taxable Age 49y

Edit: Spelling

Re: USBank Cash+ Approval ... but I have a question ...

I would just call them now to get the limit bumped up 800-947-1444.

When I applied the system auto-denied the apps I put in for INQ's.  Called and had them reprocess the app which turned into 1K limits on 2 cards.  I called them back again and asked for 25K/ea and they countered with 10K/ea and that's where they have sat ever since.  1K just isn't enough to do much with w/o having to micromanage it for scoring.

@JESCredit, definitely try to call US Bank and recon SL. If I remember it correctly and others can confirm, US Bank won't do another inquiry when doing the very initial SL recon upon approval.

@Obscure-Expert-- that's a massive recon success by the way, going from 2 x $1000 to 2 x $10,000. Wow.Smiley Surprised

Thanks!

You can call U.S. Bank Underwriting Services at (800) 947-1444 and request reconsideration of your credit limit.  With any luck they will use the original hard pull.  The analyst you speak with will not be able to change the limit but they will put your application back into the review queue for an underwriter to take a fresh look.

But bear in mind that banks consider your entire credit profile and not just your FICO scores.  While you have excellent scores you don't appear to have a long established credit history.  Also, your income will make it difficult to get substantial credit limits since lenders by law are required to evaluate your "ability to repay" and that is based primarily on your income.

Re: USBank Cash+ Approval ... but I have a question ...

I called. They said they won't be able to see the card number in their system until tomorrow, at which point I can speak to someone regarding the SL. They could see the SL and APR. 19.something% Not too important to me because I typically PIF.

@MaizeandBlue I know my income will limit my SL. But there's not much I can do about that as I'm on SSDI. So I'll give it a go and see what happens. Regarding my short history, I'm surprised I got approved at all for this card.

Thanks for the advice Smiley Happy

I was dinged for a 2nd inquiry in January. Initial approval for $1000. Called underwriting, asked for $8k. Later that day the 2nd inquiry hit and it was approved for $3k.

Seattle - If you want it you have to take it from them.  If you've followed some of the ballers around here like Mahraja you just go at them with confidence and grab your CL's.

For example I picked up the Uber a couple of weeks ago with an instant approval (11K) and really I was fine with that but, then just called them up and told them 25K would be a better fit and within 2 minutes it was 25K before they even printed the plastic.

As to OP.... Anything is better than settling for a paltry 1K w/o at least trying.  When I picked up my cards with them they would review on the same HP from the app for up to 30 days.  I think I saw somewhere though it might be a HP for a 2nd look but, it's worth it if you even just get them up to 5K to have some room to move with the CL/spend.

Re: USBank Cash+ Approval ... but I have a question ...

I spoke to USBank again this morning regarding increasing the $1,000 SL. They said that if they send the CLI request to UW, there would be another HP. No matter what. We discussed my profile, and while the CSR could make no guarantees one way or the other, they suggested waiting six months to make the request due to the relatively young age of my profile. And in the meantime, use and pay the card. I'm ok with that.

While the $1,000 SL is low (aka paltry) compared to my other cards, it's adequate for what I actually wanted the card for, which is the CB categories. That was the goal, and it's met. And in retrospect, when first building my credit I used a single Discover Secured with a $200 SL and made it work. With $24,000 total credit in other cards, I think I'll survive. Smiley Wink

Also, they said to expect the card sooner than seven days as it's already in the mail. Good.

Thanks to those who replied for all the advice, and to the board at large for all the information I needed to confidently apply for this card.

Re: USBank Cash+ Approval ... but I have a question ...

JESCredit,

Congratulations on getting in with U.S. Bank and congratulations on the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Card addition to your collection.

Going forward, contact Underwriting directly when wanting a recon for a SL. The reason being is Cardmember Service is just going to submit a request through the standard CLI option in their system and because your account isn't at least 6 months old yet it'll auto decline in Casper - the system U.S. Bank Cardmember Service uses. Underwriting will at least be able to submit your application for manual review and another rep will reconsider the SL through there.

To be honest, Cardmember Service knows literally nothing about the credit line increase process. At the end of the day all they can do is submit a request on their end and the system used will spit out an approval, a counter offer for them to provide you or a "you'll receive documentation regarding your request within 7-10 days" which is 99.9% of the time a decline. The "if they send the CLI request to UW, there would be another HP." is not entirely true either. They're just required to inform you it MAY result in a hard inquiry to the credit bureau.
