apply or wait

So I am 19 and have 6 credit cards. I got my first card in january 2013, a discover it, and my last card was the amex bce a few weeks ago. I know that applying for more cards right now will bring my score down even more with the HP's, but I've been thinking that it would be better for my AAoA if I can get the cards I want earlier, and the HP's will drop off before I would ever need to use my credit score for something important. I really want the US Bank Cash+, and maybe the salliemae card, and I would also like a travel card by the time i graduate. My income right now is around 20k, but this summer I will have a job and can report over 60k, which would make it possible to get the US Bank Cash+. So my question is should I apply now, wait for the summer, or wait even longer? I am good at keeping track of all my cards so having too many isn't a huge problem. I am new to all of this so let me know if any of this is stupid.

IMO, I would wait.  Better income potential and recent new accounts aging off will help in the long run, not to mention any recent inquiries and the AAoA hits.

Re: apply or wait

US Bank is apparently also very inq sensitive (not only Barclays) and with the many new accounts I would definitely wait

Re: apply or wait

Also remember that the US Bank Cash+ is a Visa Signature, so to have your application approved would require at least a $5000 starting limit. With your relatively short credit history I don't see that happening. Just my opinion though. I would wait. Good luck!

Re: apply or wait

I think I am having some trouble understanding the damage applying for a new card does to your credit score. I know I won't be able to get the US bank cash+ or the CSP, but I think the salliemae card is perfect for me, and i think I have a good chance of getting it. Wouldn't it be better for me to get the card earlier because 2 years from now, the HP would drop and my AAoA would be larger compared to if I applied a year from now. Another quesiton I have is when inquiries are dropped from the report, does your score automatically go up? Or does in not work like that?

PS i kinda regret getting the BCE because the salliemae seems much better which is why I want get it

Well, the problem is with 6 new cards, your AAoA is tanked right now, which makes it look like you're desperately opening accounts due to some financial issue (which it doesn't sound like is the case). It's better to let those accounts age so lenders that are INQ sensitive know you aren't a risk.

I'd wait. Also, I'm not sure how fallen INQs factor into the score, as I am new-ish to credit. Maybe the credit oracles can chime in. Smiley Tongue

Welcome to the forums!

I'd suggest reading the following:

Common Abbreviations

Credit Scoring 101 - great for knowing what is in your credit score and to see how your score is impacted.

US Bank requires a credit history of +3 years for their Cash+.  I noticed that you received an Amex recently; are you aware of their 3xcli policy?

Inqs lessen over time and after one year no longer counts towards your FICO score. The issue is not whether you will be approved, it's if you need the additional TL.  IMO, quality over quantity is more important.

If you can justify the need for the SallieMae card and you're confident of your chances, the decision is yours.  Barclays can be fickle and they may not think your chances are as good with new TLs and inq's.
