2017 Cardpurgeocalypse™ has spilled into 2018

I started this process last year (search this forum for "Cardpurgeocalypse" for further reading), after netting some great approvals from respectable lenders. I closed all my store cards except Amazon.com and Lowes, as well as a couple of finicky cards that wouldn't grow.

This afternoon I spent over 30 minutes on the phone with someone from Amex to close three of my four accounts with them: My revolvers. The CSR was trying to convince me to to keep them open for emergencies, and didn't seem to understand that Amex is not going to get my daily spend, let alone emergency spend with those tiny limits ($3,500 across 3 cards). Being denied a CLI over and over didn't sit well with me either, when I have a $30K Pay Over Time limit on my PRG. I decided to keep the PRG open because I have an AU that is putting spend through it and will basically save me the annual fee - otherwise it would have been time to chop it as well!

I also called up Chevron Visa and closed that one, which took less than three minutes using their automated system. It was an upgrade from the store card last year, but I've never found a reason to use it. The more expensive gas gets, the less the reward potential is. Today I put $41.73 in my tank, which was 12.063 gallons at $3.459/gallon. That's less than one percent back in rewards. With the Costco Visa, at least I get $1.67 back on that! Smiley LOL

Next steps likely include:

Discover (No CLI's from them either. Would love to use one of their BT offers without maxing the card out).

Lowes (We can get the 10% military discount, plus an additional 2% cashback and 0% for 6 months using Blispay)

Amazon PLCC (Learned my lesson with this card, when I had racked up $4800 of 0% promos on it. With my Amazon Visa, I feel the pressure to PIF almost immediately!)

Possible steps I might take still:

DCU (I love the no-fee cash advance feature, but their dated website and weird banking systems annoy me. The last time I overpaid the card, they immediately threw the rest into my savings account, then hit me with interest charges for the average daily balance until the statement period closed. Why not just keep the Visa account at a negative balance until the statement cuts, then use that to pay the average daily balance?)

$3.45/gallon! Holy smokes! I'm still annoyed it was $2.03/gallon this morning (I really like it under $2/gal). Congratulations for cutting unneeded cards from your line up!

Nice going!  My next purge will begin in June or July, combining BoA and Chase cards and probably kicking my last remaining CapOne to the curb.  I totally agree with you on the gas card.  Every time I stop at the pump, there's a 5 cents off per gallon offer for whatever that station's card is and doing the math even a 1.5% back card beats that.

Yeah, we don't have state tax here in Nevada, so they just charge us out the wazoo for gas to get some NDOT funds. Plus my car requires premium, and I only fill up at Chevron unless there isn't one around.

You just wanna be able to say that you have a 100K BoA card, lol Smiley Very Happy My guess is that I'll get another $10-12K out of them this year through CLI's on each card, then they'll probably cut me off.

Can I just say how much that takes getting used to when you've been able to get by with regular to going to premium for a car. Not as bad before but at the beginning had to tell myself to fill with the best.

Massachusetts is in the middle of the pack for gasoline prices, but I'm also in the "my car requires minimum 91 octane fuel" camp.  (And of course here it's usually 87-89-93.)  It used to just be a slightly higher per gallon price (10-15 cents) for the higher tiers, but now it's usually almost a dollar more for Premium than Regular here.

There's some truth in that, but I think I'm going to keep my Premium Rewards for a while.  (Besides, it would only be $99,900. Sigh.) But with DW's card in the mix, it'll still look impressive having two BoA cards at $70k or higher.  And of course account combinations used to be HPs with BoA, then became YMMV.  If my mileage varies to a HP, you can bet I'll be asking for another CLI or two. Premium is usually $0.50-$0.60 more settling around $2.70 over here for the time being.

My car says to use premium but can get by on mid-grade and I have just been using that.  Higher prices don't bother me so much as I own 15k of Chevron stock.  So I am glad the original poster uses Chevron gasoline.
