You'd probably have to test it out at your specific location to see how it codes.
I've got a couple of gas stations in my area that are attached to grocery stores as well as some Stewart's and they aren't consistent in terms of coding as gas as some code as grocery. You could find that the gas codes as wholesale club, for example.
If it doesn't, all you have to do is go inside the club, and load up a Sams giftcard with your Freedom. Then use the Sams giftcard at the pump. Sams and Walmart giftcards are valid pump tender.

Good tip. Are the gift cards affected by holds, like they put on credit/debit cards at the pump? That's something to keep in mind.
My dad's Chase Freedom did not get 5% at the pump when swiped. I didn't try paying with the app though.

If it's a store brand gift card there should be no hold.
I can't speak specifically about Sam's gas pumps, but I used to buy Kroger store gift cards with my BCP to use outside for gas, and the pump would get the balance of the gift card before I started pumping (and display it on the screen) so there was no need for a hold. I can't imagine that the pumps at Sam's wouldn't do the same.
It's easy to verify in any case... just pick up a $5 gift card at Sam's (or for the purpose of this test even Walmart) and try it out.

And if you live in CA, if the $5 card test doesn't work, you can cash out the gc.
I bought gas Chevron/Texaco gcs from Walmart.com during that Disco quarter, and those didn't appear to have a hold, but the issuer warned that they may be unusable for small balances. Because of that, their policy was to cash out small amounts on request. I thought that could be related to a hold of some kind. Another aside: Trivial complaint, but the gift card was charged at the credit/debit price, not the cash price, which strikes me as a violation.
