This varies by lender. Some lenders like people who carry balances a bit more (ie citi) vs other lenders who seem to prefer a PIF approach (ie amex).

That's a good point, red.

AMEX definitely prefers PIF to installment payments...I think this may be a corporate culture thing (AMEX is still relatively new to the revolver market).  But I would also say AMEX are the exception more than the rule in the industry.

Again, I would never discourage anyone from PIF (that's what I do).  All I am saying (and I think what you were saying earlier in the thread) is people don't need to curl up in the fetal position and pray the Credit Gods will strike them down simply for making a large purchase, then paying off their debt (with interest) in a reasonable time frame.  I would not advocate paying the minimum either or making a habit of maxing out cards.  But running a high balance on one card, then making regular incremental payments every month for 6-12 months until it's paid off is more the rule than the exception in the United States.

I think about the people I know (outside of the forum)...I would guess most have some type of CC balance.  How many of them actually get AA'ed?  Or people with BT cards where the whole point is to pay off the debt slowly?

Is this one purchase going to take up 90% or do you currently have a balance on the card? If you have a balance already posted why not just pay that in full now. This way when the tire purchase post your utl is not so high.

had $75 balance on card and charged another  $860 today so i'm good. i'll pay it when it's done "pending" (hate the pending time span, lol)

so, all is well and thanks for the help everyone. due date isn't until the 1st.

sometimes i think i read way to much into this usage/utilization crap. i'm just going to use the cards the way that work for me and never pay interest. some CCC's will be ok with it, some won't. I'll keep the ones that work for me and "who knows what" the rest. all i know is our SUV rides niceeeeeee  Smiley Happy
