Even applying for a new card with AMEX is sometimes a soft pull if youre already a member, so I'd be surprised if CLIs weren't as well...

Mmmm, I have to disagree on this one. I applied for a second card and got a hard inq (EX only, in this case, as was the original card.) But my CLI was a soft.

My experience with Amex was the same as yours. I apped for a Blue in Dec 06 and a Gold in April 07, both resulted in multiple hards on EX and EQ.

Re: AMEX CLI With No Inquiry?

Amex CLI are softs.

The CLI button is hidden away under a tab in your account... when you log in, over to the right there is a list of options to do with your account... I'm sorry I can't give exact directions right now but just click all the tabs you can that give you more options... something about managing your credit account or something. Remember up to 3x current CL.

Yes, when you switch from a charge product to a revolver, or vice versa, you will generally get a hard. I know I did. No new credit penalty, though, due to the backdating bit.

American Express allows you to ask for up to 3x your current CL each CLI request.  If you card is eligible, it should be instant.  My experience if it doesn't give it to you instantly, you are not getting it, but it's always a soft.

Re: AMEX CLI With No Inquiry?

aren't accounts with very large credit lines more likely to be subjected to a financial review?  my amex blue has a 12K limit and i'm not going to asking for a CLI.

I dont think it has any thing to do with the credit limit that prompts for the FR. It is spending and payment patterns and several other issues triggers the FR.

My blue has a 20k limit, Wow that would be a 60k limit. Won't that raise red flags?

Yes in that It may lead to an F/R or request for docs.

The 'triple your current CL for CLI request' tip refers to obtaining a TOTAL CL under about 20k and it does seem to be alive again after being snuffed out during the crunch.
