Though, with that said, if I had any concerns regarding possibility of declined charge, I'd reach for Amex.
I have nothing meaningful to add about "the button," but I can definitely second this ^^^ based on my experience both years ago as well as in recent years. Even without the button I never worry about my Green or EDP not working.
(Although to be fair U.S. Bank would be right up there with them... so far they've not been 'skeered' by anything I've thrown their way, and there's been some weird stuff.)
Same @UncleB but Amex wins because I used physical card at the gas station, then there hours later someone ordered a pizza in Tokyo (spring, middle of shutdowns), and they let the charge go through.
I'm like "okay, if these peeps don't wanna inconvenience fraudsters, they will probably extend me the same courtesy" 😂
Absolutely. In my almost 20 years with Amex I have never had a single declined charge whether it's $0.87 or $20k. They approve charges to a fault when it comes to fraud in my experience. "It's not like you to charge four first class Lufthansa tickets. We approved the charge but just wanted to make sure it was you." is a call I will always remember.

Even after reading the links (which helped), it does seem odd that AMEX would make such a link so readily available without any cautionary label, but then sometimes become alarmed when curious people hit it to experiment! Counter-intuitive to human nature and technology.

Right. I am sure it made sense when they implemented it "Oh, someone wants to make a big charge, so let's give them a way to see if it will probably approved" Ignoring that some people would most definitely view this as an opportunity to see "how much" COULD be approved, with no intention of making such a purchase (and then compare with others, vaguely reminiscent of comparing the length of.... oh, no, I never did that) I would guess though that this is much more common on credit card forums, it may not occur, or be of much interest, to the average card holder, who just expects it to work much of the time.
And, to be fair, we could do the same with OTL credit card charges ("My CL is $20K, can I make my balance $25K $30K?") but since you actually have to try to charge, too expensive!

Whereas, in the usual YMMV way, my only in-person decline was an Amex, for about $35 at a supermarket. (OK, out of state, newish card, but still!)
Like others have mentioned, I've never had Amex decline a charge regardless of the amount. I will say though that the most I ever swiped for was (2) $5k back to back charges when paying the sales tax on new vehicles for my wife and I. However like @K-in-Boston mentioned, I did get a text that was to the tune of "is this really you" but the transaction had already been approved anyway.
I will say if there's ever a lender that I have absolutely confidence in as it relates to transaction going through without issue is Amex...and honestly I'd add CapOne to that list. I can go months without swiping my Venture card and then drop $2-3k on there and never an issue; they don't even bother calling or texting.
So I use that button quite regularly, especially since we have a PSSL of around $7k and regularly bump up close to it. So sometimes I need to check if our next grocery store purchase is going to be approved or not lol.
However, I'm normally just checking for a few hundred bucks, mainly because we're at or close to the limit. Fortunately AMEX does allow us to go over - have gone up to over $500 over without issues. (Hoping eventually our SL will get an increase...)
Amex used to let me always go double the limit on the revolvers

Question for the forums, I haven't touched my check spending piwervon my Charles Schwab because of the stories involving it triggering and FR from Amex. But, when I look through my terms and conditions and see a pay over time amount of $2k. Is this totally different than check spending power?
Yes, Pay Over Time is very different from spending ability. Some people have $35,000 POT limits (that used to be rather standard) and Amex would likely cut them off before they got anywhere near it, others can easily spend multiples of their POT limits.
Tried with 100K didn't work, so tried with 1K less, and voila. I will never spend that much on my platinum card. The max I spend on this card was 33K or so in one month.
Well, this is random
