So an overall summary of this thread, from what everyone has posted.

FRs aren't common and they aren't random. There are ways that one can trigger them into wanting to perform an overall review on your PayBack ability. Just as we all want a reliable CCC or Lender, they want the same in a borrower. Use the card as intended, only use it within your financial means, and always try to PIF. We all know the history of AMEX and their charge cards.

Amex can be your best friend or your worst enemy, you decide the outcome. Treat them with care and respect, they will be eternally loyal to you. Treat them with negligence and they can be like an upset wife wanting to opt out of the relationship.

Disagree with that bit!   They are a business.  If something goes wrong, they will show little loyalty, and close cards or CLD just like any other issuer.  The length of relationship might tweek some parameters, but not loyalty in any real sense, just as we are free to sever our relationship.

Nothing should go wrong as long as you are following guidelines and using the card with CARE and RESPECT.

+1 Amex is a business. Let's not get carried away talking about things like loyalty and being faithful to a credit card company or whatever. Its a service and we are the customers. I don't know why people insist on giving amex all the power. Plenty of other lenders out there that can make money off my swipe fees if amex isn't interested.

Re: AMEX FR Curiosity

I do agree with that. We must remember that Amex is a business thanks to its customers. Without us there's no amex. Don't surrender yourself.

Ummm, life happens.  You lose your job, you have a medical emergency, you have to default on another card.   A loyal friend might stand by you.  Amex is a business with primary responsiblity to the shareholders, they won't (usually) provide loyal support.

Re: AMEX FR Curiosity

After building history with Amex they seem to treat the customer well but its hard to say they would be loyal to the customers since at the end of the day it's a business.

I wonder how they treat members that spend millions a year on the cards. I doubt someone like bill gates would get a fr.

Being that bill gates net assets is valued way more than Amex I don't think he would be getting an FR ever. That would be absurd. As to someone whose spending lots of money, but their financial status is not a matter of public knowledge I think amex would only FR if thye believed it was MS or something illegal going on to protect themselves. I certainly don't think they would do a random or routine FR check on a customer like that, unless they wanted to risk losing all those profits. A lot of people I know who are very wealthy would tell amex to go to hell if they got an FR and just take their business to another lender. People with that type of money don't need credit cards or their rewards really. They get them for the benefits and convenience. If a lender wants to start making them jump through hoops its no longer convenient.
