I am looking to get the Gold Delta Skymiles card with the 50k sign up bonus and need some clarification to make sure I qualify. I had the card in 2012 and closed it before the first year was up to avoid the AF. The website did not have specifics for qualifications, just a blanket statement "if you have had the card before" .... I am hoping that doesn't mean you can only ever get the sign up bonus one time.
1 per lifetime per card is the norm w/ AMEX

Surely someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure AMEX is one lifetime signup bonus per card.
I never paid any attention to that before. Shoot. It would be a great offer as I have a trip coming up in the spring of next year and I could use the 50k to get roundtrip flights for the lady and myself. $0 AF for 1st year is great....not sure I can find a way to justify the Platinum $195 since I haven't been flying much this year compared to last year.
Thank you for the insight though!
They are "one per lifetime" now, but I believe that applies as of a certain date forward.
It is possible that OP's cycle was prior to this really starting to be enforced.
As with many things in credit, YMMV, but in this case, given the benefits of the Delta card, and the ( in my admitedly amateur opinion ) possibility of getting another 50k miles, I'd be inclined to go for it.
As an example, I got the Delta Gold card in 2013, and got a 30,000 bonus if I recall. I applied for the Delta Platinum card in early 2014 and got another bit of a bonus. I closed the Delta Paltinum card a few months later in 2014 (and got a prorated AF refund).
They started pestering me again this year, in 2016, to upgrade my Delta Gold card to a Delta Platinum, for another miles bonus. So I took them up on it, and got that bonus as well. Granted, it's not quite the same thing as a new app bonus, but the point is, I got two bonus on two Delta Platinum cards.
Worst case is you get a good AMEX card that gets you the benefits of a free checked bag, Group 1 boarding and discounted purchases on the plane, for the waived first year AF.

That is a great point. Only question that I have, how would I know (aside from spending the $2k and waiting for it to post to my account) that I would be getting the 50k miles?

You don't.

because amex bonus wording is confusing.. if you app for platinum and meet the spend you would get the bonus. pair it with a charge card if you can get a 50k PRG offer etc
Confused. Thought it was gold to gold. Yeah, he's correct on the different flavors of Delta, and getting the bonus upon spend requirement. I've played that, and am on 3 of four at the moment.

So if I got the Platinum and changed to the Gold and then back to the Platinum (hypothetically) I would still qualify for the promo sign up bonuses each time I switched?
