Last November I got the AMEX Rose Gold card with the Resy SUB, well worth the $250 AF. This year I called in for a retention offer and got nothing, so thinking about closing the card, but when reading over the Resy SUB verbiage (to see if I'd be eligible for apping for the card again lol) I saw this (bolded for emphasis)
"If we in our sole discretion determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this offer in any way or that you intend to do so (for example, if you applied for one or more cards to obtain an offer(s) that we did not intend for you; if you cancel or downgrade your account within 12 months after acquiring it; or if you cancel or return purchases you made to meet the Threshold Amount), we may not credit, we may freeze, or we may take away Membership Rewards points and statement credits from your account. We may also cancel this Card account and other Card accounts you may have with us."
I was charged the $250 AF on the first statement after getting the card, and as of November 1 2022, it'll have been a year since I had the card; can I cancel this card without consequence before the next AF hits or do I need to wait for the AF to hit, then call in to downgrade the card and get the AF refunded?
Wait for the AF to hit. You may have better luck with a retention offer then.
Note that while they won't claw back the SUB by that point, it is possible (though perhaps unlikely) that you will be inelgible for other SUBs from Amex for a little while.
Sigh. I don't want any problems with AMEX, so guess I'll be forking over $345 for the EDP and Rose Gold smh. I'll keep in mind to downgrade both next year. Thanks!
In your shoes, I'd probably downgrade the EDP to an ED once the second year's AF posts. Maybe you'll get a decent offer to re-upgrade. Re-upgrade offers can sometimes be better than retention offers. You can do pretty well churning upgrades without opening new accounts.
