I have had my Platinum Card for almost three months, and I have already completed two billing cycles.
I originally applied for the Mercedes-Benz Platinum Card and I had it for a few weeks before I decided that I did not need the extra perks. I did a product change over to the regular Platinum Card and completed my billing cycle and also got the 50,000 MR Points signup bonus that only comes with the Mercedes-Benz Platinum Card. Even though I did a product change, AMEX gave me the 50k bonus for MB.
I didn't get charged the annual fee after the first billing cycle. I thought that I would be charged immediately; That did not happen.
I contacted AMEX and they said that it would be charged on the next billing cycle. My next biling cycle ended yesterday and so I expected it to hit today. Again, it did not happen.
I just contacted AMEX again and asked why I have not been charged my annual fee. The CSR said that because I am a new cardholder that I would not be charged an annual fee for the Platinum Card. I reiterated what he had said and I also said that during the application process - no where did it say that I would have my annual fee waived. No piece of literature that I recieved said this anywhere. He insisted that my fee was waived for the first year and I told him that I would take record of the conversation for my records (Screen shots) and he said that this was fine.
I am still a little confused and if this is true, I am very grateful. ***Note... I have only been a "Member Since" January of 2015. I have excellent history, clean credit... and no negatives. Last month I also opened up a large CD and HYSA with American Express; Could this be why my fee is waived? Do they have any access to see this or are they two different entities within Amex? I haven't even updated my income info for my cards or listed my CD or HYSA as assets.
Any insight or help is appreciated!
*****UPDATE (12/4/16)*****
I realize that this post is from back in March, but I feel like my experience is helpful in a sense.
As of today (12/4/16), I still have not been charged my annual fee for my Platinum card (opened on 1/3/16).
As stated in the original post, I originally got the Amex Mercedes-Benz Platinum card and then switched to the regular Platinum card shortly after... and then just recently I have switched back to the Mercedes-Benz Platinum card. I have never been charged an annual fee and I did inquire with a CSR about this in the past to which he told me that because I am a new cardholder, I would not be charged an annual fee for the Platinum card.
***Keep in mind*** Two months after I opened this card, I also opened up a large CD and HYSA with American Express... Whether this had any influence on that matter... I do not know? Maybe? Possibly? I tell myself that it is quite possible because of my experience of not being charged an annual fee.
Now it is December and as of January 3rd (my anniversary), I still have not been charged anything...
Lucky Me? Or was this a courtesy of American Express and my extended relationship outside of their credit card platform?
Lucky you. I've had my platinum for the same amount of time as you and I was charged the whopping AF on my first statement cut. Good to see you being honest and upfront with the CSR about you not being charged your annual fee and actually documenting it. I would be paranoid not paying my AF I'll probably overthink and feel like it'll ruin my internal scores with them or come back later to haunt me and have Amex tell me I didn't pay such and such etc. but hey in your case the CSR said it was waived so document and record it and consider yourself lucky lol.
btw even tho they're both platinum cards. Except one is the Mercedes Benz version, I thought PC weren't allowed until your card is at least 1 year old? Maybe cause they're both platinum versions so it was allowed? I may want to PC to the gold prg whenever I'm allowed to.

Yes, it is very odd. I have only heard of active military, Ameriprise or Morgan Stanley getting the fee waived with restrictions of course.
In regard to the product change restriction; The annual fee for the MB Platinum is $475 and the regular Platinum is $450. I didn't increase my annual fee, it decreased, so I think this is probably why. From what I understand, you can do a product change to a lower annual fee card within the first 13 months. You just cant go to a higher annaul fee card. It could also be that this is the same card essentially. I did take advantage of the $100 MB certificate good for MB Apparal and Merchandise. I just didn't feel like I was going to use the other perks and the sign up bonus was better at 50k compared to the 40k with regular Plat.
I am very paranoid in general... Haha, so I wanted to get everything squared away in regard to this. I am still expecting it to hit at some point, but that is the paranoia in me, and hopefully everything that the CSR said was accurate. Either way... I love this card. ![]()
my amex platinum fee didnt hit my statement for 2-3 cycles. i thought could i possibly be getting the fee waived but it showed up eventually.
Yes, I have a feeling that something isn't quite right, so I am expecting it to hit. I suppose I could always send them the screen shots, but either way; I am not difficult with these things. I would pay regardles. It is only fair to the rules and the initial agreement.
I didn't know AMEX lets you do a PC before the 13 months was up.

Starting at least a year ago, you will see language on the Amex agreement that the written agreement constitutes the entire actual agreement and cannot be overridden by verbal or other communications from an employee etc. Standard boiler plate to protect a company from employees getting things badly wrong
The annual Membership Fee is not waived on the Platinum Card, and I do apologise for the CCP's misinformation. Under normal circumstances, the fee will charge at the close of the first billing cycle. I haven't seen an offer to waive the annual fee on the Platinum Card in many years, but do you think it's possible you did have such an offer attached to your account? Unfortunately if it does get billed, regardless of what the CCP said, this is a part of the Cardmember Agreement that we are quite strict on:
"This written Agreement is a final expression of the agreement governing the Account. The written Agreement may not be contradicted by any alleged oral agreement."
I secretly wish you luck in not being charged that fee, though! ![]()

@ Hey @Anonymous do you know the correct rule in product changes? Is it okay to downgrade from a platinum to gold prg within the first year? Or are you only eligible for a product change AFTER the first year is up with the card?
