AmEx Gold offer - possible to match 25k with 50k?

Hey all,

Recently went on a tiny app spree with 2 AmEx cards, and while I'm excited to be a part of the family now, I'm sort of bummed.

I recently applied for the Gold over the phone thinking I could beat the 25k offer that kept popping up on my computer screen, but the CSR couldn't offer anything better. I gave it a go, and was approved! but this past week, I just ran across the 50k offer. Spoke to live chat online, and they told me these offers were dynamic so they have no power in trying to match the offer on my screen to the offer I have on my card.

Has anyone had any success in trying to get their intro offers matched with a better one within the appropriate window? I don't know if this situation should require a call to one of the many credit backlines that are on here. Thanks for any advice in advance!

I highly doubt you will get the upgraded offer. Amex usually sticks to what you applied for. If it was Citi, you might have had a better chance.

+1.  Can't remember a time when I've read that Amex has matched an offer, sorry OP.

Re: AmEx Gold offer - possible to match 25k with 50k?

I was able to get Amex to increase my original signup bonus for the then Premier Reward Gold card from 25,000 MR to 50,000.  But from everything I have read on these forums and on other websites they don't match offers.

I should emphasize that I've been an Amex member since 1995 until I allowed my account to lapse while in good standing.  So when I signed up for the PRG the CSR specifically cited my previous history as the reason why the increase was approved.

The original SUB for the PRG was 25K MR points; but roughly two weeks later I noticed that the public offer was temporarily increased to 50K MR points so I called Amex and asked them to match.  The CSR agreed to match because of my history with Amex but he did not give me any verification that the match was actually done.  So I logged in to Amex's Secure Chat and asked another CSR who verified that the offer was increased to 50K (see chat transcript below).

I got the 50K bonus about a day or two after completing the required spend.

Later I tried to get an increased SUB for my Amex EveryDay card and was turned down.  The rep on Secure Chat told me that because I had completed the required spend so quickly after opening the card, the original SUB was already hard coded to my account and couldn't be changed.

I just used the Mozilla incongnito window and got this offer. How much is the 50,000 points really worth ? I haven't paid much attention to the charge cards. Is the $250 charged instantly after being approved?

@Gmood1 yes no grace of year on the $250..  Assume first bill although not 100% positive on that

Re: AmEx Gold offer - possible to match 25k with 50k?

In my experience Amex won't match offers. What you get is what you get. So keep an eye out next time you apply, uscreditcardguide usually links or at least notes the highest available SUBs and shows a history chart of previous SUBs for the card (the history isn't always 100% but whatever)

If you want a bit of retribution as it were, poke around at the Amex Green card, there's a 25k bonus for $1k spend and $0 annual fee for the first year. Nab the bonus then close the card after year 1, and just tell Amex you got it at the same time as the gold, decided to try both, and the green card just doesn't make sense since you have the gold card. Actually you could do the same with the Ameriprise gold card which is functionally identical to the green card, except the annual fee goes from $0 to $160. So conceptually you could get both the Ameriprise gold and the Amex green cards and effectively have 50k for $2k in SUBs in addition to your current 25k bonus.

Anyone know if the groceries bought through Walmart's shopping app for pick up, still coding as groceries bought through a supermarket?

You should have asked on here on how to get the 50k before applying. Plenty of ways to get it. Either incognito or referral.

Re: AmEx Gold offer - possible to match 25k with 50k?

Hey,

I’d say that it’s almost impossible, I mean, if you already signed up for the 25k, why would they give you an extra 25k to match 50k? Normally the high sign up bonus offers are for targeted people that don’t own any Amex card so if you already had an Amex before applying for the Gold card, it was very unlikely that they would give you the 50k sign up offer. Also, as you probably already know, Amex has a policy of 1 sign up bonus per card in a lifetime (lol) so you’re stuck with the 25k for the Gold forever, unfortunately. You should have gone incognito on your computer and get the 50k offer. Anyways, now focus on working on the minimum spend and refer people so you can get more points and make up for it. I hope I was helpful!
