I have found, more than once, that when they say here's your instant card number, it really means "here's your instant one-time-use number, so be careful that you only use it on where you REALLY want it".
That's been your AmEx experience? Interesting. I think the CSR was correct when she said the creation of the physical card voided the instant number. She could see that it was no longer valid. Weird if you ask me.
I'm not 100% sure it's my AmEx experience specifically, but it has come up. Most recently with BofA after I put the new card number into a digital wallet, and then went to put it in a second digital wallet. It was only good for a single use of adding it to the first one. When I called and inquired, they explained that to me that it was single use only.
For the AmEx I was JUST approved for, I grabbed the instant number and then compared it to the last 4 digits listed on my app, which match, and I will be very surprised if they change.
It's usually just the CVC and expiration for AmEx, but they will "force" activate it on you if you do not activate in a timely manner, and that will invalidate your previous card with a different expiration date/cvc but the same number.
