I will have some unused travel credits that I'm trying to use in AA gift cards. Well, today I received a bizarre phone call from American saying they are refusing to sell me gift cards because I'm "not well known with the company," my gift card memos were "suspicious," and they "can't google who I am." Well, to the last point, I actively remove myself from google and other search results, so it's good to know that's working. But would it be so hard to simply ask me for a driver's license instead of curtly refusing my business and falsely accusing me of fraud? By far the most bizarre and insulting experience I can remember having as a customer. Do they really just let poorly trained, rude call center employees decide who's "allowed" to buy GCs? Anyone know what recourse I might have with this? Is a CFPB complaint in order? I just want to buy some gift cards!

Have you wronged them before in some way? A complaint to the CFPB won't accomplish anything as no merit for not selling gift cards as that certainly isn't something the CFPB will deal with. I. also believe a company can refuse to do business with any individual. I usually use 500 plus of travel credits each year on AA cards as well and never any issues.
dumb question.. but are you just cashing your points out to get the gift cards or have you been buying gift cards on you credit cards (any of them) to get bonuses..
the banks know ways of looking into this kinda stuff and they don't like gift cards or cash equivalent sort of things to be bought with their cards...its risky in their eyes (personally I disagree but then again, I think interest rates should be much lower too)
a lot of them will AA
otoh, any way you could PM me with how to take my name out of google searches? lol

I think him and I know for myself for example have travel credit to use each year for example my Ritz card offers me 300$ in travel incidentals and If I don't use them for well golf clubs or seat upgrades then I would lose that after a year so you can do things like buy American airlines gift cards with said credits and will code accordingly and get $300 in travel credits credited back to CC and get the American airline gift cards in this scenario or delta or whatever. So certainly not MS or anything to get bonus just utilizing the credit you paid for if you can't naturally use it in a normal way say you didn't have time to take a trip for the year due to work, etc.
