American Express 2/90 Rule

I know Amex has a 2/90 and 1/5 rule. I have recenctly applied and was approved for the Amex Blue Cash Preferred. I am now eying the Amex Green, Gold, and Platinum. I was wondering if the 2/90 rule is 2 charge, and 2 credit or 2 charge or credit combined.

I recently got approved for a gold card a delta platinum card and also a business blue plus all on the same day. Unsure if it was a one off. The business did go on review and was approved with no recon.

2/90 refers to credit card products, so green/gold/plat don't count.

you're good to apply for any/all of those, assuming amex will approve you for all 3 at the same time.

Re: American Express 2/90 Rule

I thought Amex also has a 1/5 rule but regarding the earlier post I'd also assume that wouldn't apply to charge cards? And when I was previously denied for a charge card and reapplied within 30 days, it was an automatic deny. Also in regards to Amex's garenteed pre approval does that mean I could hypothetically be approved for all 3 amex charge cards at once since their a pre approval and wouldn't register as an inquiry until I accept and then if I am pre approved for the charge cards apply for something else say the BILT Mastercard which has been on my radar and depending on if thats a approved or not accept the 3 Amex charge cards and end up with 1 credit and 3 charge. (I have been told that if I apply for multiple Amex cards at once it would register as a single inquiry)

As a blanket statement,  while American Express has a series of rules many of them aren't always followed to the letter and over the last few years there have been multiple data points reporting successes with same-day 1 charge + 1 revolver,  2-revolver, and 2-charge card approvals. although I don't recall hearing of any instances of a 3-in-a-day AMEX approvals  of any type.   No guarantee as to whether or not there would  only be a single inquiry but if not you could always later ask AMEX if they would withdraw any additional ones.  Also since you didn't reference your awareness,  you should be aware of restrictions American Express now has in place regarding SUB eligibility when the applicant has or had other AMEX charge cards, not just the card being applied for.

Re: American Express 2/90 Rule

The understanding I had was I must do Green, Gold, Platinum to get all the SUB for all 3 cards. Does that go in the order of what I apply for or the order of what I accept the card. Say I'm approved for all 3 going starting with the Platinum as my first application, Gold as my second, and Green as my third but I accept it in the order of Green, Gold, and Platinum. Would I still get the SUB for all 3 cards or would I have to apply in the order of Green, Gold, Platinum? And I was aware the 30 day application limit was only restricted to if I am denied for a card not if I'm approved. Would I go 3 in 1 day or 3 over 3 days?

Re: American Express 2/90 Rule

Correct

you have to go Green, Gold, then Platinum. Once you earn a higher tier SUB you can't get any SUB below. I'm sure there are exceptions but that's the general rule they moved to a couple years back.

I wish we could still get multiple SUBs like 2014

Current active cards:
Amex - Platinum, BCE
BofA - Unlimited Cash Rewards Sig
Chase - CSR, Amazon Prime
Citi - Custom Cash, Costco Visa
TCL - $270k
CC utili - 2%
Experian - 804

Re: American Express 2/90 Rule

Well it looks like I'm eligible for all the AMEX SUBS again, even though they say once for life.  It's been over 7 years since I hit them all.  As long as you don't get the pop up saying your not eligible, your good to go.  Problem is, I just don't have or want to give the organic spend at this point to hit those $$ amounts, new checking account funding usually don't take AMEX.  And I don't desire AMEX products for the long term.  So it's a big no can do on any AMEX at this point.  But I'll keep them in mind for a quick SUB on any future large $$ amount purchase.

Re: American Express 2/90 Rule

Speaking of that, my green card application is currently under review because they pulled my credit report for like 2 weeks ago. Am I still able to apply for the Platinum Card?
