A Charge Card account is a great way to get established with Amex if you are a first time customer. These accounts are generally easier to gain approval for than the revolving credit accounts they have. The good thing about the charge accounts is that the underwriting criteria is the same for all of the accounts, so you can basically shoot for the moon if you really want one thats packed with features, but dont mind the high annual fees. They have the Green, Gold, Gold Premier, and Platinum. The further up you go, the higher the annual fee, but it is usually waived the first year for new customers except for the Platinum accounts. The most important thing you have to remember about the charge accounts is that you MUST pay in full each month. These are not revolving credit lines like a normal credit card. If you do carry a balance and do not pay in full, Amex will hit you with lots of fees and penalties. Do that too many times and you risk account closure. Once you get approved for an Amex charge, and have it for a while with positive history, you will be likely approved for one of their harder to obtain revolving credit accounts. Hope this helps!
thanks that is very helpful. also do you know if having had an macys card by amex dischardged back in 2012 bk chp7 hurts my chanced for the charge card?
The Macy's Amex has nothing to do with Amex and would not hurt your odds with Amex. The macy's Amex is a co branded Amex and is not issued by Centurion Bank like all real Amex cards, such as the ones you are refering to or any other card on Amex's website. The BK however is what will hurt your chances with Amex, Some people have had success being approved a set number of years out from discharge and others have not. five years out from discharge is one number I have seen, but who knows for sure what Amex looks for. The best bet is to wait for a pre qualified offer to appear on their site. Good Luck.
thanks for the valuable info!
