Amex Charge Cards

Why have one? Is there some benifit other than an initial offer of points or rewards?

You have to pay an annual fee and are FORCED to pay in full each month (I PIF my credit cards anyhow, but have the option to carry a ballance). I just dont understand the upside of a charge card.

Please let me know why you have one.

I have a variant of the Platinum for the travel perks - mainly Centurion and Delta lounge access. My spending tends to go on other cards.

Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Re: Amex Charge Cards

You have to change your mental philosophy. Amex charge bills are bills, not credit card statements. I think more people out there could benefit from the Platinum and don't realize it. if you are planning a trip and use the perks it really effectively cuts down the cost of membership. You're going to want the head start with the 100k mr of course.

The style of most members on my FICO is they already have rewards cards and cash backs all over the place… but if you did all your spending with American Express family you're going to get redemptions quicker in-house.

Re: Amex Charge Cards

Credit or charge doesn't make any difference to me. I aim for what benefits me the most and the Platinum fits the bill when it comes to the perks.

I wouldn't get an Amex Green just because its a charge. I PIF all the time and have no interest in carrying a balance unless I have a 0% offer.

Amex Charge cards do give the option to pay over time if you're so inclined to do so.

Re: Amex Charge Cards

Charge cards are not for everyone and if you are not a traveler they more than likely aren't useful to you, especially the platinum. I think a good percentage of people simply get them for sign up bonuses and cancel before their next AF kicks in. Another percentage get them because they have looser UW standards and want the mythical in with Amex. Some get them because they think it's prestigious to carry one and the others get them because they are very useful. Weigh each cards benefits and costs and apply accordingly, or don't if it doesn't work.

This. People want them for a number of reasons. For me personally though, I don't see charge cards as a necessity. I like credit cards better because of the ability to carry balances. That PRG looks pretty though! Smiley Very Happy

Re: Amex Charge Cards

For the Amex PRG...2x points on dining, supermarket, and gas. All of which I spend most of my money on. 3x airfare with $100 annual airline credit. Also Amex charge cards may have some benefits that their credit cards don't ( correct me if I'm wrong), such as the free roadside assistance up to a certain amount of times.

Oh yeah....and the PRG is a pretty card lol

I think PRG and Platinum (and Platinum variants) have the premium roadside assistance. Gold and below (last I checked a few months ago) had a lower tier.
