Got the Amex Delta Gold at the end of Feb. Im checking on my spend, all that fun stuff. I still need to make a Delta purchase to get the $50.00 statement credit. I chatted with a rep from Amex. He said I need to make any purchase directly through Delta to get the $. No gift cards. He said no gift cards twice. I then go to Delta.com and attempt to purchase miles. That didnt work. I had to call Delta. Rep says she has to double check with 1 bazillion people to figure this out. Turns out, no miles purchases and no gift card purchases. Food and drinks on flights, upgrading a seat, stuff like that, is eligible. She said something about being coded as 006. I barely know what that means. Since I couldnt find this info easily on the forums, Im hoping someone else can avoid this issue.
I have seen other peoples posts stating to purchase a delta gift card to get this credit. Something has obviously changed.
Have a great day everyone!!!
If you use a desktop or laptop (no phones or tablets; for some reason those divert to a 3rd party gift card service) and make a gift card purchase for $50 at delta.com it will code the same as any other Delta Air Lines purchase. Officially, gift cards don't count.
006 refers to a delta ticket that is prefixed with 006. This means that it's a ticket on a delta flight that was sold directly by delta (that's the simple explanation). For example, 0062194043002.
Sorry I can't answer specifically about the gift cards. I would go back to the cardmember agreement and read the fine print about the $50 and what it can and cannot be. Hopefully others can help.
Also, HUCA (hang up call again) is a very real strategy when dealing with delta customer service. I deal with them all the time for business travel... 95% are great (at least at the elite service number) but those other 5% are just like "woah, gonna walk away slowly" and then hang up and call again.
Thank you both very much. Ill do the giftcard purchase and update how it goes.
Just for reference, here is my "first Delta purchase" ($100 gift card) on my Platinum Skymiles card and the credit that posted two days later.

The credit you see most people referring to is in regards to Amex PRG and the annual airline allowance. Many people buy gift cards instead of using it for checked baggage.
In regards to the statement credit for the Delta Card SUB. It most likely is designed so that you can only get it if you buy a flight, seat upgrades or in flight purchases
Uh oh. What to do, what to do.

That is fantastic.
Again, officially only baggage fees, upgrades, taxes and fees, in-flight purchases coded as Delta (no Gogo WiFi, for instance), lounge access, etc. count for the Amex credit (and airfare would count for the Delta first purchase). In practice, almost anything charged with Delta will trigger charge card and Delta card credits under a certain dollar amount. You can see that the gift card purchase (done in a real browser, not mobile/tablet) coded as airfare from Los Angeles Internal to Los Angeles Internal. While it shouldn't work, airfare under a certain amount will also trigger the charge card credit. Exhibit C:
