So, several weeks ago I had a very busy day at work, didn't really pay attention to notifications, and there were so many because I paid bills day before "Your payment posted blah blah blah", kids blowing up my phone etc
Anyway, 3 days later I noticed charge on Delta Reserve, $90(ish) for some sushi place. I did whole "I don't recognize this transaction " online, and about 5 days latter I got a notification that dispute result letter was in my account.
I didn't bother looking, because why 🤦♀️
Then yesterday, I looked and balance didn't quite look right. I decided to check that letter and - Amex says it's not fraud because restaurant provided a receipt. I'm looking at darn thing, it's card not present transaction and nothing else.
I was so confused, if that's all the proof merchant needs, then how I'm a protected from fraud and how do I prove it wasn't me, I don't think I'm microchipped nor do I wear ankle monitor.
So, now I'm like 1 minute away from "BEWARE AMEX IS THE WORST!!!1111!!!"
It gives me an option to re-open dispute, but I have nothing new to offer in terms of proof🤷♀️
Anyway, I decided to hop on chat and ask. Started with CSR who then got a fraud person. I explained what happened and asked how do I re-open dispute if I have no new info other than repeating same thing.
He went over those few fraud questions with me, reiterated that I'm not responsible for fraudulent charges (umm, your letter says otherwise), and stated they successfully opened another dispute for me.
He also indicated that for "card not present" fraud, it's best to inform them via chat/phone. Online dispute works better for those instances where you have tangible proof such as receipt for goods that were not shipped, wrong item etc after one exhausts options when dealing with merchant directly (he also mentioned "fake merchants).
Then he asks me about blocked transactions and I'm all "blocked transactions???"🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Apparently they also wanted to go shopping at Dicks sporting goods and something from apple website. I had those texts, but like I said, I did not look and they got buried.
Anyway, dispute was closed within one hour after that chat, I'm getting statement credit, all is well.
The irony ... I'd rather eat dirt than sushi.
I don't Apple anything, and I ain't no sporty spice hanging out at **bleep**'s sporting goods.
Anyway, lesson learned, Amex fixed it, we're best frenemies again.
This is what restaurant provided and this is what original decision was based on

Chat

Resolution email that came within minutes after chatting with fraud rep

So, if you want to spare yourself from dealing with fraud twice, use chat or call. I'm not saying that it's going to go wrong for everyone, but preventing problems is easier than resolving them.
While I'm happy with Amex, they did rob me of "BEWARE!!!11!" thread (or, did I exchange BEWARE for $90 🤔
PS I really hate sushi
Same sort of thing happened with me and Paypal awhile back. I submitted a fraud claim through their automated system, rejected, rep was able to reverse it, all is well. Long story short, I'll always make sure to talk to a person if my cards get stolen again in the future.
Nice experience and thank you for posting this. How did they even get your card and charge you without it?
They must have been treading light, started off with Sushi (wondering what kinda rolls they ordered) sorry, side tracked there. Then they changed it up to the sporting goods store. Interesting how these criminals think and operate.
Personally, I like how AMEX handles disputes over some other card issuers. A few weeks ago, I rented a jeep with fat tires from Turo, car broke down on I-95 only 2hrs after pickup. Turo said "I we will be charged a full day despite only having the car in working condition for 2hrs". I was like hell no "your mom". Then I remembered I paid with my Amex Plat - called csr explained my issue and the principal and less than 24hrs my card had the Turo credit.
"we're best frenemies again. " like that![]()
Wonder what is worser, Sushi or thing 2's (Son's) Axe deodorant?🤔
and it should be "they did rob me of "BEWARE!!!11666!" thread"
If caught dropping kids off in woods, then maybe ankle bracelet?
Glad it all worked out.![]()
Omg, filter bleeped Diick's Sporting Goods 🤗
I wish to dispute, twasn't bad word

I wish I knew how they got it, probably one of million data breaches. Restaurant does not ask for additional info such as billing name, zip code etc..just card info.
I'm not sure it would have helped even if it did.
The idea of someone believing that you'd eat sushi (or sea bugs) 😂😂😂
Hmmm... Fraudulent pizza in Japan ... Fraudulent sushi... Sushi came from Japan... You're on the west coast which is close to Japan... I'm starting to wonder if they were really fraudulent.... 🤔

Glad to hear it worked out in your favor with your frenemy 😀
Since this calls for a bit of a celebration given your ❤️ For AmEx, I'm taking you out to a nice sushi 🍣 dinner. I'll even fly out there for the occasion! We can give 🐄 the night off 😂

☹️
If we're eating sushi, I'll pay for your ticket to complete my pain and suffering
Can we just 🍗'n' chill as a compromise?
