Amex MSD and moving limits questions

My first Amex (HHonors) was opened 11/14

Second Amex (SPG) was opened 2/15

So my MSD is 2014

My plan for Amex, since I have decide these cards are not for me and want to close, is as follows.  Please let me know if I understand correctly:

- 8/15, when I am eligible for my next 3xCLI, I plan on doing that to my SPG, since it is currently my highest CL with Amex, which would bring me to $12,000 on that card (as opposed to $9,000 on the HHonors)

- Then i would open up either an Everyday or Blue Cash Everyday (no fee version), and when I am eligible to move my limit from the cards (HHonors would be 12/15 and SPG would be 3/16), I would do so to the BC (or whatever I get).  Is that correct?   You can move limits from a card that is 13 months old, right?

- If I was to move the limit of the HHonors and close it, with that card being my oldest Amex, would my MSD jump to 2015?

OR, now that I have this all typed out, I just thought, maybe this would be better....(as it would speed up the process)

- 8/15 I 3xCLI HHonors to $9000

- 9/15 open Blue Cash (and let's say I get a $5000 CL to start)

- 12/15 move HHonors $9000 over to BC, for total of $14,000

- Close out HHonors and SPG (kissing SPG limit goodbye)

I've got some cards. Some are pretty, some are ugly. Some are more useful than others.

Your MSD will remain the same

13 statements is when you'll be able to move the donor CL, everything else is fair game

Re: Amex MSD and moving limits questions

You cannot reallocate the full credit limit...you have to leave at least a $500 credit limit on the card that you are reallocating  from.

Your MSD does not change.  MSD and card open dates are entirely different things even though your card open dates are backdated for cards where you are the original cardholder.  MSD is based on when you established membership -- not the open date of your oldest active AmEx card.  However, if you've never closed an AmEx then your MSD and oldest card open date will be the same.

A couple questions:

  • Can you wait to open your Blue Cash? If open 9/15 it will report 9/14, if you open 1/16 it will report 1/14
  • Don't know much about HH or SPG, do they have AF? If not, keep the cards for a while and do the best transfer that you want. Cancel before the AF.

I think if you CLI on 8/15 and get BCE 01/16 you can still try the CLI on 02/16 (180 days after previous CLI), so maybe you can get the card over 20K.

Good luck

I can wait to open my Blue Cash, but we'll see if I am able to wait Smiley Happy  Itchy app trigger finger here.

My HH is the no fee version, SPG has a fee.

My whole goal this year is just simplifying my cards.  Without getting into it, I'm in the "if you aint using it, close it" camp.  And of course I want to keep my Amex relationship, so I want a card that I will actually use (which, out of their portfolio right now, would most likely be the Blue Cash).  Or else I would just clsoe the SPG, and SD the HHonors.

I've got some cards. Some are pretty, some are ugly. Some are more useful than others.

What if you're closing said card that you're reallocating from?

Doesn't matter... You still have to leave a credit limit of $500 on the card.

What's the difference between the AF and no AF HH? I opened the no AF version today but I didn't know there was a no AF version until after.
