Amex Maximum Exposure?

Re: Amex Maximum Exposure?

I'll toss in my 2 cents. It's not the size of Amex CLs. Just read a post on here the other day regarding a new Amex cardholder approved for $3K SL later getting a FR. And I know of many with very high Amex CLs never being FR ever - they just charge it, and all is bliss. I'm not aware of any particular CL threshold that triggers FR.

On an aside, I don't use the word "exposure", because Amex's exposure isn't the CL, but rather what they allow to be charged, which may be much less, or in some instances, even more.

Various card issuers look at more than just scores, focusing on one's overall credit profile. You mention often having a very low utilization, that may increase the risk of a FR, unless you're running up large balances and paying them down before statement cut. So many factors can play into it. Recently apping for cards and/or aggressively increased limits, reporting a seemingly excessive income, occupation(s) shown on credit reports, types of purchases, spending pattern changes, etc.

Hello Friends,

Just wondering if anyone knows what Amex is considering the maximum exposure these day where a FR could be an issue.  I have two cards with them, Optima at $15.5K and ED at $12K, for a total of $27.5K.  I should be able to put in for an increase in the next few days.  I assume that Amex looks at both accounts combined?  If so, what value is it best to remain under?

Thanks!

I wish there was a concrete answer...lol. Conjecture has it that 40% of your salary is "normal," but as was stated earlier, many members here are well above that. This is one of the reasons I have not asked AmEx for any CLI's, as I am already at the 33% mark...so why risk it...lol?
