Amex Plat upgrade ok but not new card

Very recent Amex PRG holder here. When I log on to the account I get that I am pre-approved for an upgrade to the Platinum card. I am aware that this is basically not allowed and a quirk of the website. However, if I try the link for the Platinum application I get the "you are invited to expand membership..." So not pre-approved. So which one is it? Anyone else experiencing this?

Both are applicable. Once you've been a PRG holder for an unspecified amount of time you can upgrade to Platinum. But it's better when you're offered a SUB to go with the upgrade.

Im assuming its merely a product upgrade and not an application? I too see the offer to upgrade to the platnium from the PRG with a 25k MR SUB.

Correct, just a few clicks and done. No new application required.

Depending on an individual's goal and/or preference, some prefer to forego the upgrade in lieu of a new SUB since the Platinum tends to have a targeted 100K MR offer from time to time.

But, if the upgrade with the SUB offer makes sense, go for it.

I have just been a PRG cardholder for literally ten days, so my understanding is that the product upgrade offer in my case is not real, as regulations (CARD act?) prevents higher fee in the first year?

Anyway, what is confusing to me is that underwriting standards would seemingly differ for a product upgrade vs. a straight new Plat application. Perhaps I'm slow...

It frequently changes from "Pre-approved" to "Expand membership" and it really doent matter because it will just be a SP for denials at the least.
