Amex Points

Can someone please explain how these points work? Sorry im new to all this. Can you transfer points from one card to another? Like say Amex Delta to Amex PRG? Could I transfer from my wifes card to one of mine? Or to the Delta skymiles? Sorry just really trying to understan how all this works? If I spend 1k in first month I get 30k Sky miles. Would that cover a flight say from LAX to Buffalo, for example? Just trying to get an idea..

You have to look if amex membership rewards transfers directly to skymiles, which they do. You can look at who are Amex MR parterners are to see who they can directly transfer to. You need to go and look on delta website and look for award travel to see how many points it will take for fly RT from Lax to buffalo.

Re: Amex Points

Amex charge and a couple revolvers award Membership Rewards (MR) points. Amex allows you to redeem these points in a number of ways.

1) Use for a statement credit. Super easy but TERRIBLE value.
2) Use to buy merchandise in their amex mall. Pretty easy, terrible value.
3) Exchange points towards gift cards they offer. Value of usually $0.01/point, gift cards are easy to have mailed or emailed quickly.
4) Transfer MR points to partners. Here's where points can be worth much more than $0.01/point--think 0.02 to 0.05/point. How it works is you "transfer" points from the MR currency to airline miles or hotel points. Really, you surrender a certain number of points back to amex and amex purchases (well assigns those it already agreed to purchase at discount) the amount of points or miles from the airline or hotel you selected on your behalf and puts them in your account. You can then go to your frequent flyer or guest account and use those points in anyway that program allows you to just like if you had earned those points from the airline or hotel directly. Remember, different programs have different MR "exchange rates" and all points are not worth the same.

Re: Amex Points

Oh and to answer your other question...points are pooled across all MR cards you have. So if you had a green, prg, and platinum, you'd have one mr balance and a note about points shared across cards. You can not simple exchange an MR point from say a prg to a starwood point. Though you can go into your mr point and redeem 1000 MR points for 333 (I think) points...having a starwood or delta card also has no effect on the transaction.
