I totally agree with you. I too would like to know how much I can actually purchase, rather than it being some undefined limit, but that is what it credit card is. That is why I only have credit cards. In your case AmEx has made your charge card into a credit card.
As we see from lots of stories on this forum, even a credit card limit is not always a good indication of what you can spend. While any individual transaction can always be declined, we also see cases when people use "too much" of the CL, the issuer may take AA.
OK, so maybe it's an upper limit? No, because sometimes you can exceed it as well! So while "Credit Limit" sounds nice and defining, it really isn't....
Here's what it looks like on my Charge Card, I also have the option to do the "Check Spending Power". I've hit it to upwards of $10K and it's given me the GOOD NEWS! Your purchase has been approved message.
I dunno. It's just interesting. It's nice having it as opposed to the mysterious no limit spending power.
Hi All-
OP here...
Thank you all for the feedback. So, it looks like it a bad idea to always hit the "Check Spending Power tool"
I clarified with Amex and was told since both my accounts are new, I need to build a history. But, my Pay Over Time limit is 20k. So, it better to leave it alone and only use the tool when it needed.
Another question: I use my Amex Platinum more and this is my charging pattern and wondering if this might be issue.
Below is example.
Amex Platinum Charge: $2600 on Jan 3
Statement Cut: Jan 23
New Amex Platinum Charge: $2700
Payment Due: Feb 3 and $2600 paid
The $2700 is rolled over to March Statement… Since I have a balance, is this issue? I’m paying the required payment at the time of statement.
