Amex airline credit successfully changed

Just FYI for all of you. Me and my wife currently had 3 platinums, 2 gold, and 2 aspire airline credits devoted to AA this year since we were planning an international flight with them. However, we did not get them in before the switch in Amex coding. So we went to chat and was able to change all of them to Southwest for our upcoming trip to disneyworld after the January deadline. Not sure how we were going to spend $1300 on just incidentals on AA. Glad Southwest GC still works. If they kill this loophole I would have to re-evaluate some of my high AF cards.

Re: Amex airline credit successfully changed

How many gift cards can you use on a single transaction at Southwest or AA?

With Delta we are limited to three Gift Card slots in the payment options.

"Southwest gift cards – A maximum of three Southwest gift cards can be applied per passenger on each reservation. If your purchase exceeds the amount available on the three Southwest gift cards, you will only be allowed to use two Southwest gift cards and another form of payment will be required for the difference."

This does say per passenger...I would read that to be that two passengers on one itinerary could use 6

Re: Amex airline credit successfully changed

I was able to call Delta and book a round-trip itinerary using 5 $50 Delta gift cards. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I was happy to find that I could use more than 3 gift cards by speaking to a rep.

Re: Amex airline credit successfully changed

How large of a SW card can you buy and still get the amex credit? I'd rather do a single $200 card then go to delta and do a bunch of $50 cards which won't even cover the airfares I need if they don't let me use more than three at a time. Also I read that you can't even use delta giftcrads to buy comfort seats etc. Southwest fares seem to be a lot cheaper than Delta as well, although I am not thrilled with the availble southwest routes. I was thinking I could use a SW card to fly roundtrip NY-Orlando or maybe to dominican republic or mexico city. Southwest isn't really ideal for me but if its easier to redeem giftcards etc it might be the route I need to go.

Re: Amex airline credit successfully changed

I believe SW max gift card is $100. I usually travel in a group so it’s easy for us to divide it between us to allow a bunch of GC redemptions. If it’s domestic flight you could buy them each as one way also doubling the amount of GC you could use per trip. Domestically it makes sense, but I know most international flights penalize you for not buying round trip in the airfare price.

Do you mean using gift cards to upgrade to Comfort+ (W) fares? That, I don't know. However, if you're buying a ticket in Comfort+ or First you absolutely can, and it's usually cheaper than upgrading later. If you know you want to fly in Comfort+, I recommend you buy Comfort+ from the get-go and slap on any gift cards you want to use then.

I dunno I guess maybe you can if you buy it outright, but you can't buy an upgrade apparently. Per Delta's own terms "They may not be used for any additional fees (including baggage fees) or for any other products or services (including upgrades, in-flight purchases, premium seating, mileage booster, SkyMiles Cruises, cargo, hotel stays, or car rentals).
