Amex product change points?

For those of you that have done a product change from the delta skymiles to the the Blue or any other amex credit card, what have you done with the points? My delta will switch at the end of my first statement (a few days away) and I don't have a skymiles account set up with delta. Should I set it up and just leave the points in there or not worry about it. The reason I switched to Blue is so that I can build points with it and my green charge card all in the same place.

If you have an Amex Delta Skymiles card then you have a Delta Skymiles FF account.  They set one up for you automatically.  In fact, your Amex card should have your Delta Skymiles account number printed on it.

The Skymiles you accumulate with the Amex card are automatically deposited into your Delta account.  This is exactly the reason I have been championing the idea of holding off on the product change at least until you are able to accumulate enough Skymiles to cash in on all the free ones you get when you open the account.  Otherwise, all those free miles go to waste, unless you limit yourself to converting your MR points into Delta Skymiles after you do the product change.

After all, there's no AF on the Delta for the first year.  As long as it will take you less than a year to accumulate an additional 10,000 Skymiles (which is $5,000 in EDP), I have never seen the point in doing a product change prematurely.

Re: Amex product change points?

I don't have a FF # on my card. I am guessing that I need to sent it up through delta? or through amex?

I'm assuming, then, that you have one of the cards with the new design.  I haven't seen one of those up close, so it is quite possible that they no longer print the Delta account number directly on the card.

Still, unless they have also changed their SOP, then you do have a Skymiles FF account.  I would call Delta Skymiles CS (Delta CS for the Skymiles program, not Amex CS), and explain to them that you have an Amex Delta Skymiles credit card, but you don't know your Delta Skymiles account information.

Re: Amex product change points?

I called Delta and they helped me out. I forgot about the points I got just for opening the account. I will only have one month of points put in there plus the intro points before I get the blue. I guess I will just keep it open when I get the blue and I can always transfer points in to the account if I want. I will just have to wait to see when the points start rolling in what the best option is.

Glad they worked that out for you.  Yes, when you get the Blue you can transfer points into your Delta account.  Can't get double miles anymore, though, like you could with the Delta.

Thanks for your help cheddar, I know I lose the double points for delta but I don't fly much.
