Re: Amex rep gave conflicting advice?

@Anonymous

I know it's not actually them disrespecting me, but that's how I perceived it. ( it goes back to me wanting instant gratification and being an over thinker. 1 side of me says "keep working towards it and you will get there eventually"

and the other side of me says "tomorrow isn't promised, time is valuable, I don't want to have to wait 6 months to get a $100 CLI, and then wait another 6 months to get another $100, my time is precious"

i see it like this, imagine working your ass off at work for a year, taking on and completing big projects that made the company tons of money. Staying late, coming in early. And at the end of the year, your boss offers you a $100/yr raise, and it has nothing to do with them not being able to afford giving you a raise, it was a conscious and intentional decision on their part but they won't tell you why you got such a small raise. You thought you contributed a ton, and so it doesn't make sense to you. and they expect you to be extremely happy and exciting for that $100, like they are doing you a favor.

And yes, maybe they felt for whatever reason that giving me an increase wouldn't be profitable for them. If they had taken the time to explain to me why they only offered $100, and what actions I could take to get a bigger CLI, I would have been totally fine with that.  accepted their explanation and moved on. Because at least I knew what I did wrong.

after talking to you all and taking a step back I've realized maybe my anger isn't justified.

I also suspect OP didn't make CapOne tons of money, and that the "work" probably wasn't that visible to them.

Also, the wish to be told why: well, that's what the denial letter is for.   Yes. it isn't necessarily either true nor complete, exactly like when the boss tells you that you didn't get the promotion, because while it was a hard decision, it was felt that the other candidate had slightly more strenghts in the needed areas (and was the nephew of the CEOs husband's squash partner, but that's just coincidence)

If you want to compare your credit card history to job performance, you have to classify yourself as an "Intern".  You haven't been in your position long enough to warrant any type of raise or promotion.  You are still on probation.

Agreed, after talking with you all I have realized that I was being unreasonable and my anger wasn't really justified.

I feel I made a snap judgment, after seeing the $100 offer, I automatically assumed I had been with them long enough to warrant a reward. And I felt that waiting wouldn't produce better results. Because the offer was the offer.

so I told myself waiting until "X amount of time" wouldn't matter because there was no hope.  And the reality is I don't actually know if any of that is true. They could very well make me a better offer in the future.

and so I now see that I made unfair assumptions and judgements, and that I was probably expecting too much too quickly.

Dude, if when the time comes to get another CLI and they don't give you anything, you should just close it. And before that stop worrying about it so much.
This is stressing you out far too much.

Re: Amex rep gave conflicting advice?

It's just a card - a tool, not a badge of honor. As long as there is no AF,  just hold on to it forever to add to average age (or oldest if that is the case) and toss a coffee on it every so often to keep it open. Who cares if it never gets a huge CL - there are other cards out there if you so choose to get them later.

It looks like you jumped into the CC game with an empty slate but ok score, hoping to get the "perfect" portfolio of cards. But there are no perfect cards, and your file is thin so your expectations will not fit reality right away. Age things out and work over time. It's the long game, but constantly obsessing about it will get you nowhere, things need to grow.

Patience.
