I have an offer to upgrade amex gold to plat. Right now my gold AF is due at the end of this month. I have a few questions:
1. If I upgrade card when will the new AF post? Immediately? In 45 days?
2. Do I still have to pay the current AF at the end of this month or will that be removed and incporated automatically into the new AF or will I have to pay it and the new AF later on will be reduced by that amount?
3. If I upgrade now a few weeks before my AF is due will I still get jammed next year and have to keep the card to avoid a clawback or will the new AF post far enough back that I will hit the 13 month mark with the card before it becomes due?
Reason for the questions are I really like the offer but I already have a plat card which I need to hold on to so paying two AFs on plat cards is less than optimal due to duplicate benefits. If I can get this card and get the SUB I can justify the one year AF. This is rather frustrating because had they made me this offer in the past I would have never taken the offer for the other plat. I just took it because I wanted to hold on to a plat card for perks.

Only reason I can think of is for a sweet upgrade offer. After one year, downgrade the second plat again. Opportunity cost for the points earned by Gold is huge, though, if that is someone's main food card.

I'm no Amex expert either, but I'm 'expert' enough to know that getting a second Amex platinum card would be a waste of money, regardless of the SUB.
I agree with @SouthJamaica. Would you pay $695 for those MR points, alone? If the answer is no, then I wouldn't do it. Also, while you may get those points from their offer, you're losing points for an entire year from what could be earned with your AMEX Gold.

Well no. Not at all. I have another amex gold, so I am not losing anything on that front. Also, I don't agree that its just points alone I am getting. First off its like 130 or 140k points which is not an insignificant amount of points. Second there are some credits I can use top lower the bite of the AF. Doesn't completely offset it but lowers it a bit. The value proposition drops a lot more though if I'm going to have to keep the plat card for the second year. If I don't do the upgrade I'm going to cancel the card.
