Sorry for making a lot of threads recently
I keep calling Amex to see if I can upgrade my gold card to the reserve card. They said they can't until 1 year from account opening which would be 9 months from now? We'll I don't really want to wait that long because I will be flying around 3 times in the next month and that sky club membership would be awesome. My sky club membership ended a few months ago. Do you think I can apply for the reserve and if accepted I can reallocated my current credit on my gold card to the reserve? Or how does something like this work? Thanks!
Hey Gornet!
With Amex, they are sticklers for having the account for 13 full months before you can PC it. Unfortunately, the only way for you to get the reserve now is to app for it. SP if denied and HP if approved. At the end of the 13 months, you can reallocate all but $500 of the CL to the reserve. Hope this helps. ![]()
Amex is getting hammered with reviews for that card on their site. Its kinda funny. Everyone is complaing about the 29 free for guests to get into the club.
I'm glad that I could help. With regards to waiting- might as well. The AF is waived for the 1st year on the Amex Gold so just use it occasionally and re-allocate at the end of the 13 months. They will credit you back the AF charge when you close the account at 13 months because the new AF will have hit.
If you are getting the Reserve for the lounge access then you are wasting the $450 AF. Just buy single day passes for $50 each and be done. Sometimes you can find them on eBay cheap.
The reason to get one or both Reserve cards is the MQM earning for spend. With $60K spend in one year you can earn 30K MQM and you would be exempt from the MQD requirements. Both the business and personal cards can net you 60K MQM or just over Gold Medallion without a single flight. Add in the companion certificate that work for business class or higher and it becomes a good deal for the AF.
You can upgrade an Amex card in less than 13 billing cycles, it's just a mostly a mystery. I upgraded my business Gold to the business Platinum AND received a bonus of MR points after about 6 months of use (could have been 5 months don't really remember). For that upgrade I received an email offer to upgrade and called in to do it. I recently upgraded my Hilton no fee card to the Surpass version at about 12 months. Did that one online no problem.
