I took a look at Apple Federal Credit Union a few minutes ago (for those who don't know, it's a small credit union based in Northern Virginia that serves teachers, students and school staff but is also open to residents of certain NoVa counties and cities) and found out that I'm eligible due to my residency. The word on them here seems to be pretty positive; there's at least one thread mentioning that they're friendly to people with bankruptcies in their record (like me) and also to credit rebuilders (I found someone in Credit Card Approvals who recounted how they had gotten approved for a card by writing a personal letter to them describing their efforts to rebuild their credit).
They sound pretty promising but I want to get up-to-date information about them, so here are the same questions I just asked about Justice FCU:
1) Is this a good CU to join, and are their Visas good cards? Specific good/bad points?
2) What sort of credit scores do they require for approval for Visas? Would someone with credit scores generally in the mid- to upper 600's have a good chance, and what sort of credit line would they be able to get to start with?
3) What CRA do they go to for HP's for credit card applications?
4) How easy is it to get CLI's from them?

I have personally submitted a couple apps. I know they do require income verification for all there apps and they are inquiry sensative. Also I applied with a 720 TU and was only offered 3K on the myRewards visa, when i orginally applied for the Signature Rewards card and they said you have to have a minimum of 50K salary for that card.

Thanks. I probably should wait a few months after joining them to apply for a Visa, then, as my most recent HP (for Discover It) was last week. I'm thinking about MyRewards Visa, in fact, since it looks like the best card for someone in my situation; my current salary is just a couple hundred dollars shy of the $50K minimum for Signature Rewards so I'd have to wait until next February to apply for that!
Maybe check out NFCU! Lots of threads about them and all they do. I see you're already part of Penfed so that's good.

I actually am considering NFCU too, but the backdoor process you have to go through to qualify for membership with them and get a card is a bit involved...
I'm the one that added the personal note to my credit card application. I had probably around a 620 TU when I applied, maybe slightly higher. They didn't require any income verification for my application and I only have $250 a paycheck going to my checking account there. The rest goes to USAA. AFCU approved me when USAA wouldn't give me the time of day. I'm very happy with them and the card. Their website isn't as high tech as other larger banks and I can't make a payment on my credit card using their mobile app (at least not that I've found) but those are my only very minor complaints. I haven't had the card long enough for any CLI info yet, but I'm hopeful that it'll grow. The rewards are typical of other cards and can be used for statement credit, transfer to bank, and a number of other gift cards or merchandise. You can't cash out the rewards for cash or statement credit until you have $50 and it looks like they cash out in $50 increments. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the update. I see that you were able to add that note as a comment on your online application - I got a bit confused at first and thought you'd written out a letter to them. I do have several other unsecured cards (as shown in my sig) in addition to a Cap One secured card - as noted earlier, since they seem to be inquiry-sensitive I probably should wait, should I join them, to apply until my existing HP's have aged some more; my Cap One secured HP is already 15 months old so no longer should affect my report and the HP from my unsuccessful attempt to get a USAA card in July 2016 should get to the 1-year mark (and be old enough to no longer put a hit on my report) in July 2017. So I figure, give it at least 3 months, maybe 4, while I grow the other cards and my car loan...

I don't think it's that involved at all. The only additional item to complete is simply joining the Navy League San Diego chapter. You print that confirmation email out, print out the NFCU application and fill it out, toss those two above items along with a $5 check into an envelope, slap a stamp on it and send it off to NFCU. A week or so later you're in. Pretty simple really. Sometimes a good thing comes with an extra step. ![]()

Exactly. The fact that this even exists as a way in for those who normally wouldn't be eligible should be considered a blessing and not a negative.
Also membership for Apple FCU is open to anyone and not just those who reside in that part of VA. Just join NVADACA and you're in
