BBVA can you qualify for a second card without checking/savings?

I am out of footprint but have had my BBVA clearpoints for over 7 months now after a preapproved mailer. I have read about people getting preapproved offers for a second clearpoints or a second different kind of card online with BBVA but i dont know if all of these people are checking/savings customers or not.

I am not a checking/savings holder so I am wondering if I will be able to ever apply or get preapproved for additional credit cards with BBVA? Do they send preapproved mailers once you are already a customer and have a clearpoints or can you eventually apply online for a second credit card with them?

Can you get preapproved online without checking/savings products? Currently I do not have the option to even apply for an additional credit card with them, only non credit products.

I got a 2nd mailer after opening an account from the previous mailer, but I didn't try the 2nd one (too soon). Maybe a few months down the line if they send me another one, I might go for it. But I am curious to see if anyone has been successful applying for a 2nd BBVA card this way.   Smiley Happy

Some people have reported upon opening a checking account (they have an online checking option available to every state) that the option to check appeared but this hasn't been the case for me. My understanding is that you can call them and they can submit the app for you over the phone.

Right.

I'd had a loan with them, so I was already registered to the website. I added the app thinking that might show pre-approvals, and it did (under "Add More Products"). But it did not show the terms of what I was approved for -- ie, APR, SL.

I didn't want to shoot blind so I opened a checking account because I had read that might do the trick. A short while later the SL ($3700) showed up on the pre-approval. I passed. It improved. I passed. Eventually I accepted. And then again for a 2nd card about 6 weeks later. I'm showing pre-approved now for another 10k but I'm waiting.

Hope that helps.

Re: BBVA can you qualify for a second card without checking/savings?

Amazing info thank you all.

@James_A I have the add products button too but the credit card option has never been there for me when i click, only checking and other deposit accounts at this time. Maybe that will change after a year. Even if it doesn't show me the limit like it did you surely they wouldn't give me another 900 LOL. Ty sir.

Worst case I can just call and cold app and see what happens now that I know you can do that. Pre qualifiing is just the way I prefer to go about it. But if I am able to get a decent limit increase on my current one I would rather just keep it; otherwise I will app for a second card and hope that the terms and limit are better.

I still dont understand why they gave me such a small limit when I had four digit limits with everyone else and my balances were all and always report under 30% utilization but I did have chap7 on my report and I guess that's why but I have seen others have that and get 8K with lower income than mine (that's what made me cave and take their offer for clearpoints, thought I would get a decent limit) but go figure. Will wait and see what happens.

This info helped a lot thank you all.

Re: BBVA can you qualify for a second card without checking/savings?

Yeah, I just did it. I've had the Clearpoints card with a limit of $8,500, which has been open for a little over 3 years. The only time I use the card is when they have a bonus spend category, like this month, it's 5% for groceries and drug-stores.  When I accepted the offer, there was an advertisement for their Select card with a 50,000 point bonus. Since there was no way to apply for the card online, I had to call and speak to someone. The process was pretty intense for a credit card. You had to agree to its terms by signing off on a document through DocuSign. They pulled Transunion for me, which worked out since its the bureau with the lease amount of inquiries. It took about a week for me to get a response and had to send over additional documents, such as my ID and a utility bill. I applied last week, 4/10/20, and got an email this morning, 4/17/20, that it was approved. The term of the approval wasn't disclosed, nor was it immediately available online. I just checked a few minutes ago and was approved with a limit of $11,500. I'm a little bummed with the limit, but given the current economic state we're in, I'm not going to complain. I'm also taking into account that my aggregate limit with a small shop like BBVA would be $20,000. This card will not be my daily driver and will most likely use it just to hit the $4,000 spend in 3 months for the bonus points.

Question... for anyone who has their Select card, I read a post that this was their premium card and is metal. Is this true? It's weird, but I have an odd fascination with metal cards Smiley Happy If it is, I can't wait until 7-days from now to get the card Smiley Happy
