I have a $2,300 balance on a 15/m 0% that will expire prob in the fall but I'm not gonna be able to pay off the balance in time and actually have more debt I need to add onto the same card with the same offer. I just used one of the checks and advanced myself the $2,300 and then made a payment right into the same card again so that should cancel out my previous promotion time limit and add it to the new debt right?
hmmm - usually financial institutions will NOT let you pay off any of their products with the same card or another card owned by that company
since you used a check, it may work - but you will need to keep an eye on it
example
i have 3 Chase cards - if i got a BT on one, they would not let me use it to pay off another chase card - it would have to be another institution like USBank or other
they give BT as a sort of bonus to you, in order to pull debt away from another CC provider, with the hopes that you will not complete it on time and they will make more money
that is the reason for them not letting you payoff one with another
that said, i do hope it works out for you!
As RSX mentioned, every lender has wording that prohibits using these offers to pay off debt you have with the same lender. It's possible this may result in issues with your account. Also possible that instead of the balance transfer terms, they instead apply it as a cash advance. But since you used the check, those most likely would not happen, presuming you wrote the check to yourself, deposited it in another institution and then paid the account from that other institution.
The other factor is that different lenders apply payments by various methods, as long as they are allowed by the Credit CARD Act. Depending on the lender, they may apply your payment in whole or in part to the new offer, which would just result in unnecessary balance transfer fees and not prolong part or all of your expiring offer. Which lender?
Penfed. I guess I should of waited until I asked. I spent $66 on the 3% BT fee just to pay it right back onto my balance with no benefit to myself. LoL
Yea Penfed has a nasty habit of dividing up payments to benefit them and not you when your entire balance is on 0% BT offer and no purchases are being made.
^^ agreed
i had staged multiple BTs with them over abpout 6 months
but when you make a payment, they don't pay down the one closest to the deadline - they spread the payment across all Active BTs
so i have ended up paying small amounts of Interest to them
frustrating for sure

Yep. I had one BT expiring this month, another in September, and so I had to pay both down this month because of how they allocate payments. ![]()
