Balance transfer checks to individuals?

Have some balance transfer offers from various cards. I'd like to purchase a used ATV from a friend. I know Citi/BOA says you can write a BT check for anything or to anyone, but does anyone have experience with others like Discover, US Bank, etc. I remember reading somewhere AMEX frowns upon it.

I have only done 1 balance transfer. I put it on one of my Barclay cards. They deposited the money into my checking account a few days after I submitted it. I haven't tried writing out a balance transfer check you get in the mail to a friend though.

If you're going to write a check I would just write it to yourself and deposit it in your own bank account.  If it were me, I would feel much better cutting a personal check to a friend rather than using a balance transfer check.  Just my thoughts...
