I love my Arrival+. 2% back plus additional 2-6% back when using their online shopping portal more than makes up for the AF in my book.

Plus all the 0% BT offers with 1 or 2% fees.

Fan of the Aviator as well. Scored 15K mile bonus not too long ago for spending 500/mo for three consecutive months. BT offers as well.

When is their shopping portal better than the alternatives (where you can use the Arrival+ as well)?

Which alternatives are you referring to?

I can think of:

Chase and Discover (using their cards)

Ebates, Upromise, Plenti, and their smaller competitors

Many hotel and airline programs

Amex offers (which can be combined with many portals).

Wait, you can use Arrival+ on all of these portals?

I was thinking more TopCashBack, BeFrugal, SImplyBestCoupons etc.   Use cashbackmonitor.com to see what portals are offering from a specific merchant, e.g. http://www.cashbackmonitor.com/cashback-store/kohl-s/ for Kohls.

While Barclays gives a 2point boost,  higher rates are available with portals that allow the use of any card (ebates, befrugal, topcashback etc).    Issuer branded portals, with the exception of Discover, rarely give great rates

You can definitely use Arrival+ on Ebates, Upromise, Plenti, etc. You can link any credit card to them. You could also use your Double Cash for the same base 2% reward.

It's nice that Barclay has a built in portal but there are definitely alternatives with similar or better payouts.

Browsing the Barclay portal, just a quick glance shows that IMO the payouts on the others are almost definitely the same or higher in many cases.

Re: Barclay fading out

No one portal is the best for everything. Cashbackmonitor is definitely a nice place to start, although it may not reflect every publicly available promotion (and certainly not targeted ones).

The ones I was using the most were:

1. Discover (especially when I got grandfathered in for double rewards for a year)

2. Chase

3. AAdvantage

4. Barclaycard

Lately, I'm mostly using a Citi card in conjunction with airline portals, since I've become a heavy user of Price Rewind.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Agreed. I've used Barclays when it was most advantageous. Discover is the way to go for Aveda and Puma though because I'm getting 10% back this year.

And then sometimes it's PayPal Credit because I'd rather get 6 months of 0 payments, 0 interest and pay cash at the end than rewards now, pay now.

I have noticed this with Barclays as well, and while I think sometimes "doom and gloom" posts on this forum are rather overblown, I think there might be some merit to this one. It's not a good sign when a card company is overtly shying away from its most prominent offerings (Arrival+) without replacing it with anything else.

I actually quite like Barclays, so their rapidly dwindling card offerings is definitely a little worrisome to me. I have two of some of their best cards in the Sallie Mae and the Wyndham with the 15K renewal bonus and I would be upset if I lost them

I am right with you. These two cards and my PSECU CC are my top three cards..

Too many to list..

This makes a lot of sense... I bet they will nerf Sallie Mae in the near future as it was only popular with the rewards crowd and people they told about it. So the majority of their (admittedly relatively small) user base isn't garnering interest but claiming statement credit after statement credit.

I guess this is a minority view, but I like the Barclays cards, and would love to have even more.

My favorite credit card in the universe is their Ring card.

I find plenty of use for my Barclay Rewards, LL Bean, CashForward, and JetBlue cards.

Re: Barclay fading out

I noticed they pulled the no fee Arrival entirely, even through third party links. Arrival+ seems to be available again, but even after being gone that long, no visible changes to it. Same rewards, etc.

I do like Barclaycard overall.  They have a decent web site and mobile apps, and for my Arrival+ card that I'm phasing out, points are awarded per transaction and when the transaction clears.  Quite a bit different from many other cards that do end of cycle rewards processing.

I'm all for competition in card underwriters.  We need that, else we will have some really boring cards.
