Re: Best Credit card for First Card/Building (not secured unless we just have to)

Ok so his one score was middle 600 which is great he actually only had 1 in Collection from 2014 or earlier sorry I'm trying to go all by memory right now but he applied for a few Cards, Citi, Discover (Both said No-Go) and one Capital One (instead of doing the prequal to see what all cards he qualified for he accidently shot his shot at the Platinum by Capital One and was approved for 300.     Probably because the car we originally got financed for was under Cap One originally.      Sooooo YAY!!!     My question is since I don't have any experience with Capital One well their cards...he says he can't ask for a CLI for at least 5 months I know of course you want to wait 6 months to ask for your soft increase or whatever like a regular card but if he wanted to call and see if he can get his original SL increased is it possible to ask that right when it arrives in the mail or is this one of those cards that he has to wait it can't be helped situations.?!

Congratulations on DF approval.

No recon available with SL. Have DF put plenty of swipes on the card. Hopefully, he'll get out of the credit steps with a decent auto CLI.

In 3 or so months, check for upgrade.

You can get a SP CLI before the Credit Steps ends. If they said it would be $500 after 5 or so payments on time. You can hit the CLI button and if approved. Whatever they grant. They will deduct from the $500 once Credit Steps ends. Either way $500 will be the total amount. The old days you could get a CLI and credit steps bonus. But that ended like so many more things like combo cards.

How many inquiries did your fiance use up? He could have saved some of those had we had access to information about his report before he started applying. Members here would have definitely steered him away from Citi, for instance. I'm afraid that he might have to do some gardening that wouldn't have been necessary had he stuck to applying for the card that he had a chance of getting.

3 but I told him to stop at 2 but he wanted to do one more just to see....LOL    So he is in Garden mode after his inquiries but I guess getting one yes got him more excited than he thought?!

Re: Best Credit card for First Card/Building (not secured unless we just have to)

Gardening for six months is a good idea either with or without the wasted inquiries. If the inquiries are evenly distributed among the bureaus, he's probably fine. If they're all piled in one place, he might want to avoid having that particular bureau pulled for a year.

For his next card, either he or you should come here with detailed profile information so he can be steered in an appropriate direction. This information should any accounts on his reports, open or closed, including a list of cards (both primary and AU), along with their balances and limits. He should also list any baddies and their dates.

In the meantime, impress upon him that most "cool" cards will likely be out of his reach until the second year of his building process. Smiley Happy

No he won't be getting another card for a year....this is something talked about once he did these pulls now he isn't going to touch for a long while....so he got his card he is just going to have to stick with it for a year and then if he doesn't just upgrade that card and keep it then we will see about adding one at the year mark depending on what is showing on his report at that time.
