Sure, but I think the card with 5X dining and amazon is still marginally better than the Forward, if only because redemptions are in cash rather than TY points. It's not bad card, but I'd agree that I wouldn't app for it just for this, if I already had the Forward, or even the Chase Amazon.

For many maybe, but depends on your spend. If you buy tons of stuff at Amazon, you can easily exceed $8K per year (even though they don't seem to sell Vanilla Reloads for some reason!). And, with a Citi multiplier, the 5x Forward points can be worth 6.65 cents when redeemed for travel. But most people can't get the Forward now, so a little moot.
Edit: writing that made me check "just in case". I was excited to see that I got an Amazon auto-complete of Vanilla Reload Cards, but alas:
"Your search "vanilla reload cards" did not match any products." Could have been a well-kept secret.
It's a shame because the Citi Forward seems perfect. Maybe it's TOO good and they got greedy lol.
Turns out that the US BC+ has rotating quarterly categories as well, so the only consistent cards for Amazon right now appear to be the Amazon Chase and Sallie Mae. I read online that Citi won't cancel Student credit cards after graduation, due to them simply using the "Student" category for marketing purposes. So as a recent college graduate, I decided to try applying for one anyway. Will be interested to see if they approve the application or not.

Cash Plus aren't really rotating categories, in the Freedom/Discover sense. Each quarter, you chose from a (mainly) fixed set. They have removed the three "abused" categories and replaced them with others (including the Bookstores one that covers Amazon) but otherwise they are fairly stable. It's just that every quarter you have the opportunity to change, which can be an planning advantage if for example you are thinking of a big electronics purchase in Nov, but nothing electronics before then.
Interesting...as I said earlier, it sounds cool due to the flexibility of picking your own categories. Definitely something I'll look into for the future. I just really didn't want to open up more than one card right now, so was trying to find one that satisfied all my needs lol.
So I applied for the Citi Forward Student card, despite not really qualifying for it. Interestingly enough, they just upgraded me to the normal Citi Forward card when they reviewed my application, despite that card being technically extinct. This is good news for anyone interested in applying for it, some sort of well-kept secret ![]()

Yes, which is why they were both mentioned several times in the thread!
