BofA 3% category -- Home Improvement

Hi all,

Unfortunately, I find myself in need of flood cleanup/mold remediation for my basement.  Does anyone know if that would fall under "Home Improvement" & earn 3% if I use the BofA Custom Cash Rewards card?  ServPro is the company involved...

The alternative is to put it on my AOD card, but that isn't on a 0% promo period like the BofA card.  Dunno the final cost yet, but I'd probably rather pay it over a year than over a month.

Thanks!

Re: BofA 3% category -- Home Improvement

@wwalter2718   I think any materials you would purchase at Lowes, HomeDepot, Ace etc. for that restoration would qualify as Home Improvement stores. However, Servpro would likely code as "Maintenance" which can be found on some credit card rewards structures.  BBVA used to have that structure, but now the only one I can think of immediately is Synovus....their rewards cards carry the "Dynamic Earn" categories which covers Maintenance. The category usually covers service providers such as plumbers, electricians, etc and Servpro seems like it would fall into that structure.

There may be others who could possibly chime in with other options.

Re: BofA 3% category -- Home Improvement

Set the card to Online shopping and place your order. Then, pick it up in the store. If you want to test, may also buy something small and check how it gets coded in BOA.

If you have Discover, it has 5% category by paypal in this quarter. I also had a large home maintenance cost (~1.6k), I created a paypal key (I guess virtual master card) and after finishing the manitenance works, called them and paid the fee by this card. After a few weeks, I checked and I saw my quarterly cashback got maxed out Smiley Happy

BOA (CCR, UCR), Chase (CFF, CSP, Amazon, CIC, CIU), US Bank (Cash+, AR, Go, Ralphs), Discover, Citi (CCC, DC, SYW), Amex (BCP, HH, Biz Gold, BBC, BBP), Affinity CR, Cap1(Walmart), Barclays View.

Re: BofA 3% category -- Home Improvement

It depends on your service vendor and what code they have registered (can't do anything about it if they set themself as a toy store, for example), but I can 100% confirm that electricians, plumbers, and landscapers have all counted for "Home Improvement" for me on my BofA CCR set to that category. To me, that's a reason to have that card set to that category... It's good for most Home Maintenance, not just shopping for the supplies for such.
