I've been looking at a card that is going to give me multiple cash back categories that I can choose from. I looked at the US Bank Cash+ card and I don't anticipate them approving me with such a conservative outlook on apps rn. I tried applying for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature in March, but was denied due to not having a deposit account with them. Is this typically the case as well when it comes to their student cards? I'm looking at getting the cash rewards student card, but don't want to have to open up a checking account with them as their fees are quite large just for checking accounts. Does anybody else have a good recommendation as well for any card that is similar to these two?
Thanks!!
BoA does not require prior relationship with them for getting a card from them. US Bank likely denied you as you dont have a long credit history and they wanted a banking relationship. As I have said BoA has no such requirements.

While it's not impossible to get a Bank of America card without a prior relationship, having an "aged" deposit account with them increases your odds above whatever they are without a relationship.
Are you a student? Most banks, BoA included, have student checkings which don't have monthly maintenance fees.
I think BoA does have a similar rule to 5/24, and it can be more lenient with a deposit account. You can google this part
I'll check them out. And when I applied for the Alaska Airlines card, the first reason given was that I have insufficient deposit funds held with Bank of America.
Also @gdale6, the only reason I was denied with US Bank was because of opening too many accounts in the last 12 months.

I thought the Alaska card was issued by US Bank, ok, disregard what I said but if you have a solid credit portfolio you can get in with them without deposit accounts as I have 2 cash reward cards with them and have not had a deposit account with them since 1996.

Okay, awesome. Good to know. Thank you. I wonder if it's due to me not possibly having enough income, even though they never mentioned it. I'm not looking to get it like right away, but want to know how I can change my profile in the coming months to warrant an approval, or if I'll just wait until I get the card from US Bank.
You don't need any other accounts to be approved for a card from BOA. My only relationship with them is the Cash Rewards. I'm sure it would help to have deposit accounts with them as already mentioned but obviously not a requirement.
I'd say BoA does not weight relationship as heavily as Wells Fargo or US Bank but they care more than, say, Citi, where it seems to not matter one bit. BoA is often easier to get approvals from once you have an existing account but it's definitely not required and you can absolutely have just a credit card with them.

IIRC, it has to do with inquiries - if you're a customer it's a limit of 7/12, and if not it's 3/12.
