PC BofA Premier Reward to Premier Rewards Elite
This is a slow roll for sure....
Over a year since I started considering this move. Three things prompted me to pull the trigger. 1.) AMEX Gold is creating more drama with their higher AF and PIA monthly coupons so looking for options. 2.) I moved money to BofA to get to Platinum level on their Preferred Rewards teir, primarily to get the kicker of 50% on credit card rewards. Doing so will put me at uncapped 2.25% on generic spend and 3.00% on dining and travel -along wiht other perks. I plan to move more cash to BofA and get to the 75% kicker which will put ther return at 2.625% and 3.5% respectively. 3.) @Aim_High has been a great resource on this forum and he made the move aprox a year ago and this awesome post.
Rather than a new app, I PC'd to save the drama of a hard-pull (been 2.5 years since I've had one! Also didn't want the drama of figuring out what to do with my existig card. It was hard to forgo the nice SUB currently beig offered.
**The PC process was very peculiar.
Started with a phone call to BofA, eventually to a live person where I was read disclaimers blah blah blah. A week went by, I didn'thear anything then got an electronic message asking me to call them and provide more information. This made no sense. When I called they were more confused than I was, and I essentlally went through the whole process again. This would never happen at AMEX or Discover.
About a week later, I got the below via snail mail. Uhh, the change will happen aprox six weeks after I requested the PC. Peculiar, but the good news is that I have time to change my mind :-)
Not sure why such a delay.
I may post more as this slow-roll PC progresses.
Congratulations on your PC approval, your patience, and your 2.5 years in the garden!
Congrats
Congrats on your product change to the PR Elite and joining our little "club" @MachoHombre.
And thanks for sharing your insights on the product change. That was a somewhat strange experience but sounds like they got it done. True, BofA doesn't always impress as much as some of the other large banks on customer services like this one.
Totally agree that AMEX continues to mismanage some of their cards like the GOLD which makes them less desirable. It's sad that they insist on trying to squeeze such high revenues out of all their cards from the fee-and-credit system. The GOLD could potentially be such a nice card if they would stop changing it so often and just keep it simple. Doctor of Credit said that AMEX planned to update (40) of its' charge cards worldwide in 2024. And that it planned to update each charge card every 3-4 years. IMO, that's a ridiculous pace of change. Each card becomes a moving target so who knows if the card program you sign up and take a HP for is a card that is useful in your credit future?!? Looking back, the Premier Rewards Gold was apparently $160 just ten years ago. Then re-branded to original Gold name in 2018 with AF of $250; then 2024 with fee hike to $325. The GOLD card has been around since 1966, so it would be interesting to see the full history of fee changes and rewards or perks. (Member Rewards program wasn't started until 1991.)
What I appreciate about some of the other large lenders is that even when the AF is high, the credit system isn't so narrowly-restricted by time-frames or MCC or vendor to make them difficult to claim. Similarly, the AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is easier to use in this regard, since it credits $25 per month on any dining charge for $300 annually as well as giving the free night benefit. Both of those together easily recoup the fee. Bank of America's credits on the Premium Rewards and Premium Rewards Elite are equally easy to claim. I think you'll value the card and find it a "keeper."
Congrats on your successful BoA PC!
UPDATE:
Well, the letter I received states that I've been approved but it won't happen until October 10 (aprox six weeks since I started the process).
However, surprise today -an overnight package came with the new card. Number is identical to my curren PR card, including expiration date and security code -so basically a clone of my current card except branding plus bthicker/heavier. I'm assuming the perks of the PRE status kick in October 10, meanwhile I can use the card as PR.
@Aim_High -I guess if I choose to not go through with this product change -I could keep this fancy card (in appearance) for the vanity factor and just get the traditional PR benefits (and lower AF! ....LOL)
Yes, very strange that the product change takes so long to become effective, yet still they've already sent the new card!
Lol ... yes, keep the fancy card if you change your mind since the card number is identical! I do like that fancy card.
Thanks for the PC data point and hope you are enjoying the PRE card. In my past experience doing PCs with BofA and other lenders, the new card will be issued immediately and the benefits associated with the new product are available to you immediately as well. They provide a window of about 45 days during which you can revert the product change and get the old product back; I believe they do this for regulatory compliance. Even if you have used some of the benefits of the new product, e.g. getting statement credit for travel purchases, they usually ignore it and simply revert to the old product if you initiate it within the specified window.
@MachoHombre, things change, but based on a PC experience from 2021, BofA will extend the expiration date or update CVV to prevent this from happening when converting to a lower-tier product. Citi does (did?) the same when someone on here converted from Citi AA Platinum Select to Executive, the CVV and expiry date were both changed when they later declined the PC after being issued new cards.
