I logged into my Orchard Bank MC account today and saw that the AF posted. A few weeks back they had agreed to waive 1/2 the AF, and I was willing to keep the card for another year. That was before the announcement came out that Cap1 was purchasing their CC division. I was hoping it was going to be Wells Fargo, as I already have two Cap1 cards and a third one will be usless to me -- if I would even be allowed to have a third one.
I was poised to make an online payment and get the AF out of the way, and then I stopped and asked myself -- why? Why should I pay even a reduced AF to hang onto a 400 CL card that I don't need and that I won't be able to hang onto once the sale goes through? It felt like flushing money down the toilet. I picked up the phone and talked to a CSR and explained what I just outlined above. I was transferred to a senior CSR and repeated the conversation. She tried to convince me to keep the card for account age, but I told her that I don't have a thin file and already have a good AAoA. She tried to convince me to keep it as a backup card, but I told her that I have another MC, a Visa, and two Amex. After that, she went ahead and processed the cancellation. I'm pleased to say that our conversation remained calm and businesslike. Interestingly, at no point did she offer to waive the AF entirely as an incentive to keep me.
So, within the course of the last few days I've said goodbye to two cards with substantial AFs: FP and Orchard. They both served their purpose, but it feels great to be at a place where I can leave them behind! Moving on...
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats great! I'm sure that I will be cancelling mine prior to the annual fee posting. I'm so blah towards them and their stingy credit lines. I am a bit curious to see what happens post sale however.
Great work! You've made amazing progress in your credit scores since 2010. I hope to say good bye to my rebuilder cards too over the next 1-2 years. Thanks for sharing!
