Hello,
I have been in the garden for about a year and I figured I would help my UTI out by requesting soft pull CLI's on a few of my cards. I have been a CAP 1 card holder since 2007 and have only gotten 1 CLI. So I hit the love button on Sunday night and got the 10 day letter response. So I entered the online chat with a rep and asked why the denial? I then asked for the denial reason on the spot instead of having to wait for the letter. Of course I didnt get much info, so I requested an APR decrease and was denied for that as well. So I requested an upgrade to the QuickSilver, was told I could have the offer but would need to chat with a diffrent rep. At this point it was getting late so I decided to call back the next day to make the upgrade.
Called in on Monday and made the upgrade to the quicksilver with no problem. Again I inquired as to why I was not granted a CLI. Being as though I am a long time customer, never been late or missed payments and have only had 1 CLI. The rep basically gave me a bunch of bs but told me I should try to pay double the amount due each month.
I check my email this evening and had a notice from Capital One that a document was available for review. So I log into my account and access the document center. It turns out the document is the letter explaining why I was denied the CLI. The document is very detailed and gives your Equifax credit score. It also tells you straight out why you did not get the CLI.
My Doc says the following; Your average monthly payment has been to low.
The letter then goes on to advise they did not do a hard pull for the inquiry and then gives you all the key factors which are having a negative impact on your score.
I wanted to share because it seems to be a common issue amongst members on the board with getting denials from Cap 1 on the CLI's. I hope this info helps others who are thinking about hitting the love button. Or if you have recently hit the love button and been denied, you should check out document center.
That is the EXACT reason they give me. Card holder since like 2005 and my limit is still $500.
To give credit where credit is due, they gave me a credit card when no one else would touch me. Now, with an insanely better credit history, I would think that I could get an CLI but I guess not. No biggie really being I use other cards for rewards.
Sure, but keep in mind that scores are not the only factor used in determing CLI's. It will just depend on whom you are requesting the increase from as to which factors are weighted more heavily.

although i've been decilned for CLI i did ask for apr reduction in order for me to continue using the card as my primary
and they transferred me to credit analyst and gave me a temperary deducti0n for 6 months i think
in a way it's good that you got declined for the apr because it if they do reduce it it's only for alittle while
But as for the CLI I'd suggest you send them a message on Facebook and they will esculate your dispute to EO and you'll get better results

I had the same explanation as well, along with another one:
Recent use of this account's existing credit line has been too low
So my payment was too low, and now I haven't used enough of my credit line? Seems contradictory. Recently I used the Crap1 Venture card to fly my mother out from AZ, and I think that caused the payment issue. I went from a $500 balance to a $1500 balance so of course my old payments seem low compared to the new balance.
I have never had a late payment with these guys in 10 years and I've had a maxed card yet paid it off. No idea what they are looking for.
I will probably just pay this card off and stop using it. I've done this with a few cards and really who needs Crap1 once you get average or better credit scores?
They had me on a measly $300 limit too, put in for CLI and got denied.
I then was approved for Chase Freedom, Chase Saphirre Preferred, Discover It, and Amex Blue Cash Preferred within 1 week, totaling about $23,000 in limits. The Cap 1 also had an Annual Fee and no rewards. Needless to say, I cancelled the card immediately.
Seems Cap 1 makes up their mind from the beginning what kind of customer you are, and despite improvements in your score/profile, you're still that kind of customer as long as you have the same card. At least, that's my limited experience with them.
I received my welcome letter for the quicksilver card yesterday. So I called back again during business hours to complain about my APR and CL. I was transferred to someone who seemed very eager to help me. She put me on hold and then came back with there were no offers available for me at this time. And to top it off I will still be charged the annual fee with the Quicksilver card.
I agree with the above, it seems like Cap1 puts you in a certain tier and never bothers with you again. Which is fine with me because like I told the rep I plan on paying down the balance on this card to about $500 and then making a transfer to a Chase Freedom or Citi ThankYou card. I am so tempted to try now because they both keep sending me offers in the mail. However, I know my utilization is hi right now, plus I would like to bump my scores a bit more before applying.
Oh and on a final note, I figured I would hit the Love bottom on my Orchard card which transferred to Cap1. Seems like I may get a raw deal here too because I got the message I would receive a letter within 7-10 days. When I asked the rep why I was denied on this card, she stated I was not denied they just needed more info from me.
So we will see.......
