I recently was denied for a Discover It card.
The letter states my Equifax fico is 611
I'm not even sure if I should call or not?
There's a phone number on the denial letter 1-800-347-4736, this number is different than the "backdoor" number: Discover: 888-676-3695 (Recon)
If I decide to call, which nember is best to use?
"Thank you for your recent Discover it card application. Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your request at this time for the following reson(s):
COLLECTION, CHARGE-OFF, OR JUDGEMENT
But on the back of the letter it says:
Key factors that affected your credit score were as follows:
1. SERIOUS DELINQUENCY (I imagine this is the 5 accounts SallieMae has on my credit report, followed by 5 more accounts from Great Lakes Higher Education, which is where my Sallie Mae loan was sent to after I stopped paying (because I was under the impression that my Sallie Mae loan was in forebearance and I wasn't supposed to begin making payments again until this year) Long story short, SallieMae sent my 5 loans to Great Lakes Higher Education in 2011, then my 2013 tax refund was intercepted and the loans were paid for. Any remaining balance is now in good standing with FedLoan where the balance was consolidated.
So my credit report shows all 5 Great Lakes Higher Education loans as "Account paid in full; was a collection, paid collection"
They are also showing on the Equifax report as: "Consumer disputes - reinvestigation in progress" for all 10 of these listings.
2. Length of time accounts have been established (first account shows as being established 12/1/2012, newest account 12/1/13)
3. Too many inquiries (13) 4 of these are from my car lease this past August (all 4 are from Nissan)
4. Number of accounts with delinquency (again, SallieMae), and one for the amount of $3,500 from a credit union that was used to supply a loan for an online college scam that I am currently speaking with a local consumer law company has been working on filing a class action lawsuit against this company
My credit is a HOT MESS because of Sallie Mae and because of the other $3500 account listed. Other than that, my report is clean. Yes I know I seem to have fled on my Salie Mae student loans, but again, I was under the impression that there were no payments due again until this year. When I log into my SM account, it shows no evidence of me ever even being affiliated with them. I never received any letters from them regarding payments due, or late payments, so I was not being irresponsible.
Well I planned on asking a two line question here and I ended up writing a book! Yikes
I'd call the number given on the thread from myFICO.
You can try a recon, but I'd say your chances of success are next to 0. As a judge told me, ignorance is not a defense. Any creditor is going to find it hard to believe that Sallie Mae didn't make any attempts to contact you, and they're going to assume that you've been ignoring the phone calls, too.
Now, on your CRs the Sallie Mae accounts should state that they've beend trasferred to another lender. So, they'll know that you didn't exactly run out on them.

Don't bother, you have too many serious credit problems for Discover to consider you.

I agree...Discover is pretty darn conservative.
