I app'd early on a Sunday (rec'd my ty for applying email at 124pm) and knew by the evening (rec'd approved email at 655pm).
Have you tried using the 'check my status' link?
Weird. I figured *if* I had been declined as I thought I was initially, that by Monday the 'In Progress Email Link' would update. I clicked the link and still in progress. The best I can hope for is I mis-read what I thought was 'Sorry we need to decline' and was in fact 'Sorry we can't approve immediatly'.
In any event, still in progress from Friday afternoon.

Call the phone number on the status page. They processed my app immediately when I did that and approved me.

It's pretty typical (in my experience) to get conflicting messages from AMEX. I'd say you've got about a 50/50 chance either way. I've gotten "no" followed by "hang on" followed by "yes." And I've gotten "yes," followed by "psych!" :-)
