One of my oldest cards is a Capital One QS I've had for about 12+ years. I don't remember what it originally was but it was changed to QS a couple years after I had it. The limit has been stuck at $2250 for about 10 years. From what I read it's likely "bucketed". Does that ever change? Since I changed jobs a few years ago and do excessive amounts of travelling, I have an average monthly spend of about $10-12k across all cards and always paid in full just before or after the statement dates. Just for the heck of it, I've been maxing it out and paying off the QS before the due date the past few months to see if that helps. When I asked for a CLI one of the reasons I got back was "Recent use of this account's existing credit line is too low". Am I doing something wrong or is Capital One just a pain?

it's unlikely you'll be 'unbucketed', but there is upwards potential, but there's no promise you'll ever get a CLI up to 3-6k total
it might be more than a few months of that maxing behavior before Cap1 acknowledges it in your CLI requests, but it also may never happen
if you actually want a cap1 card with a high limit, just check the pre-approval and apply (venture X won't show up, but if venture does it's a good sign)
assuming your profile is now clean and thick, you should get a nice limit with high upwards growth based on that massive spend

When answering their cli questions, what did you claim for future spend on that card? Esp. compared to overall credit card spend which I believe is also one of their questions.
Maybe 1%, if that, get freed from the bucket. Isnt hurting anything. Adds to your age metrics. But some will say close it. 50/50. Up to you.

Read this:
They're a pain. It's not hopeless, but it's not particularly hopeful, either.
There has been a spate of higher than usual CLIs from Cap1, since the start of the year. But lots of people haven't gotten a CLI, and the DPs are all over the place. We don't really know why Cap1 is generous in some cases and not in others. Even high spend, which has been the most consistent thing Cap1 seems to like, isn't always a requirement.
If you want to push high spend through the card for a while, I did get a $300 > $3300 auto increase a few months back after putting 60%+ spend on my QS for 6 months. But I suspect that bump is more about them than anything I did. Ironically, I got the same ""Recent use of this account's existing credit line is too low" denial less than a week before my auto increase.
There's nothing wrong with trying for a CLI, but I wouldn't invest too much into it, either emotional or financial. If your goal is just higher limits in general, you'll have a better chance applying for a new card, including from Cap1.

Capital One almost seems like a bit like Dante's inferno with different levels of bucket hell. My Capital One cards are probably bucketed and may have limited growth potential but they aren't in the lowest of buckets where ppl get stuck at $1k or less either.

I used to love Capital One. I was able to get my limit up to $8K but hasn't moved for years. Got a Savor card and hasn't moved from the $3K limit as well. I try to get a increase but I always keep getting denied. I just recently switched my QS to a Venture card and will see if they'll increase that one but we will see.

I don't think your Capital One credit cards are "bucketed," since your credit limit on one credit card is $8000 and your Savor credit card credit limit is $3000.
The term "bucketed" refers to a sub-prime credit card that has subsequently been "bundled" into an investment such that the credit card's credit limit can never change.

Edit: It seems more likely to me that your Capital One credit card credit limits (or "lack" thereof) are affected by "the Fed" increasing interest rates than what I think is the original meaning of the term "bucketed" on this "forum."

If a card is bucketed it may never move. But just apply for a different card and you should be ok.
